The Year 2000 Problem - Y2K - is tremendously appropriate to our times. Not only are we at the end of a millennium, it is also supposed to be the time that Jesus Christ will return to Earth and the End Of The World will come to pass. Likewise, we are at a point in History when all of Humanity is becoming more and more co-dependent and rigidly linked, when progress is stagnating and living gets harder and harder, when there are apparently no new lands to conquer yet conquerors are more capable and dangerous than ever - a point, in short, which is most worthy of Douglas Casey's term for it, "The Crunch."

Y2K threatens to make The Crunch crunch down even harder. With millions of computers convinced the year is 1900, it is literally possible that millions of people could die simply due to machines which will refuse to function. If Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson were right about the Illuminati and their sense of humor, this would seem to be their supreme joke: the collapse of Global civilization, all because of two lousy digits.
