1981
THE MONTREAL MASSACRE

defeats
For the second Canada Cup tournament it was decided that a 1 game final was to be played as opposed to a series. This time Canada met up with the Soviets in the final as everyone hoped, but the final result was no Summit Series.

FINAL
MONTREAL FORUM
MONTREAL, CANADA

USSR 8 - CANADA 1
The USSR had failed in an attempt to invade Afghanistan the year before, now the Reds invaded the Montreal Forum and were taking no prisoners. Although Canada had enlisted the services of the great Wayne Gretzky for the first time, the outcome of the final was never in doubt. After 60 minutes of play, a shell-shocked crowd in Montreal stood stunned, staring at the unrealistic numbers on the scoreboard in a scene all too reminiscent of Game 1, 1972.
A one game final was never played in the Canada Cup again.
