Floppy Disk Quilts

Who said that quilts had to be made out of fabric? I discovered that by combining 5¼ inch floppy disks with Styrofoam pieces I could create an unusual mini quilt wall hanging.

Please be patient. This page has many pictures that will take some time to load. Click on each floppy disk to get a better view.

The traditional star design fit perfectly on the disk.
First I sponge painted the disk with a mixture of half acrylic craft paint and podge. I used the same mixture for the star. Once the pieces were dry I glued them onto the disk.
Then I punched holes in the top corners and created a hanger with cotton yarn.

For the variation on the traditional star I fused fabric to the Styrofoam pieces.
This time I used a mixture of silver and podge to sponge paint the background.
To give it a more sewn appearance I used dimensional fabric paint to draw small stitches on the star pieces and to out line the star on the disk.

By painting the floppy the same color as the background of the star the disk just about disappeared from view.
The important part in this design it to lay it out before hand and make sure you use the proper colors for the right squares.
To finish the object coat with one or two coats of varnish.

From the traditional star design it was just small step to created the tumbling blocks.
I sponge painted the disk with a black/podge mixture.
Primed the Styrofoam pieces, which left them light grey and then sponge painted with a paint/podge mixture of two shades of the same color. This sponge painting technique lets the primer show through and adds to the color scheme.

Here I experimented with the traditional basket design.
I sponge painted the disk with a black/podge mixture.
I did not prime the Styrofoam pieces this time just painted them with two coats of plain paint. Also I have not varnished this piece yet.

I received leather scraps from a Tack Shop in a variety of colors and thickness.

For both the maple leaf and the star I've used dyed belt strips cut into pieces to form the design.
