Roly-Poly Juice Lid Angels

I've found another use for my frozen juice lids. In the "Holiday Series Issue 1997 of Crafts Magazine" there was an idea for an ornament. As usual the only thing recycled used was the lid. The wings and head were bought wooden shapes.

My first attempt at creating my own version resulted in this little angel.

  • Instead of painting the lid like in the magazine I used fabric and fusible web to attach it to the lid.
  • I've discovered that hearts make wonderful wings (The heart is about 3.5 inches wide). I used the Styrofoam from meat trays for the heart and the head (the head is a circle of 1 inch in diameter).
  • The legs are popsicle sticks cut in half. I found that sturdy wire cutters do a great job. Afterwards scissors can be used to cut the scraggly ends.
  • The yellow stars I made out of Crayola's air drying clay. I used plain white with some acrylic craft paint added and cut out with small shape cutters.
  • To make a hanger I used a thick wool needle threaded with some fine ribbon and pushed it through the wings and knotted it in the back.

I was not very impressed with the result. The angel was too round and awkward looking for my liking. So I decided to create my own version.

  • First of all I eliminated the legs.
  • Then I cut a circle of quilt batting to fit the lid and covered it with a fabric circle glued to the back of the lid.
  • I increased the head size to 1.25 inches and painted the arms higher up on the lid.
  • Buttons became the feet
  • A small piece of ribbon turned into the halo.

This angel I liked. It had personality. And went to the next one.

  • This time around rather than painting the heart I covered it with tinfoil.
  • Dimensional silver paint made a very cute halo.
  • Also by attaching the head above the juice lid body rather than on it the dimensions of the angel evened out.

I like this angel very much and will stick to this design.
