Teddy Floppy Disk Roombox

Marlies' Creative Universe

After using old video tapes for the floor and the walls of my roombox I had to come up with another material and then I realized that I boxes of old 5¼-inch floppy disks.

  • I took 4 floppy disks and placed them on top of each other. I rotated each disk 1/4 turn so that the open parts didn't line up through all 4 disks.
  • Next I took some duct tape and place the 4 disks onto the tape and circled the disks with it.
  • Now I cut the tape in each corner and then folded it down onto the disk.
  • Then I did the same thing on the other side.

Now I ended up with 1/4-inch thick piece that I could use for walls or a floor. To finish the piece I place cardboard covered with wallpaper or flooring.

tape placed around them

On this roombox I covered the center of the disks also with duct tape and then basecoated it with a layer of paint and then glued tissue paper over that and then painted that with the wall color I had chosen.

In the future, however, I will not cover the disk center with duct tape. I will cut cardboard to size and cover that with wallpaper or flooring and then glue that on top of the disks.

I covered the outside of the roombox with drywall compound and then varnished it. Otherwise, the drywall compound soaks up the paint like crazy. Then I painted the walls and wiped it back off. To make it look different I decoupaged dried 'Johnny Jump Up' flowered to the wall.

Teddy

At the dollar store I found some slot-together dollhouse furniture. On set had a rocking chair that fit my knitted teddy perfectly. I reduced a regular sized teddy pattern and knitted this teddy. As I was already in the knitting mood I decided to have the teddy also knitting. I knitted a few rows and then transferred that on to a toothpick that I cut in half. To prevent the knitting from slipping off I glued to beads at the end of the knitting needles. Then a sewed the knitting to the teddy's arms. I left a long piece of wool at the end of the knitting and made a ball which I sewed together with matching thread to prevent it from unravelling. Now where was I going to put the wool?

Basket

Then I remembered that I had a narrow piece from my vertical blinds. Only about 1-inch wide that would make the perfect material for my basket. I cut a circle and measured the circumference and then glued everything together. I cut a small piece to make the handle.

Table

The table is made from one of those 3 legged things that come with take out pizza. I cut a circle from fabric and saturated it with liquid starch and then draped it over the table and let it dry. Then I evened out the hem.

Candle

The candle on the table is made from 2 buttons, an oval bead and some yarn.

Plant

I made the plant out of Aleene's 'Satin Sheen'. Satin Sheen is like papertwist, only that it is plastic like and not paper. I remembered that I had some lying around and decided to see if it would work.

I covered some wire with floral tape and cut a piece of about 2-3 inches of the satin sheen and opened it up. I cut out 5 pieces that looked like leaves and then glued the wired in the center of the satin sheen. Once the glue had dried I cut some slits into the leaves at an angle. I bunched the 5 leaves together and wrapped them with floral tape. Then I took a clear lid from some spray bottle and some light brown plasticine. I pushed the plasticine into the lid and then pushed the plant into the plasticine. Now all I had to do was bend the leaves. I am quite pleased with the resulting plant.

Map

To make the map hanging on the wall look more realistic I came up with a way to make those poster holders.

I took a plastic coffee stir stick and cut it in half along the middle dent. Now I had two pieces that had a slit along one side. All I had to do now was insert the picture into the slit and fasten it to the wall.

Teddy's Picture

Making teddy's picture was simple. I took a picture with my digital camera and in my graphics program played around with the best view, made a frame and printed it out and stuck it on the wall.

Cameo

The cameo in the corner is a button I had lying around.
