One day I saw a show about creating "Faux Stained Glass"
by using dimensional fabric paint for outlining and then gluing
tissue paper on the back of clear plastic sheets. The same
day my husband had reminded me, that I had collected to many
1 cup margerine tub containers with their lids. Well, a light
went on in my brain and I saw the clear container lids as
the ideal material to make "Faux Stained Glass" creations.
Now my next problem whas how to make it look realistic. I
had no problem with the dimensional paint to outline the design,
it worked just great.
My problem was what to use to fill in the design. In the
little house at the top of the page I mixed acrylic craft
paint with equal parts podge. It gave a splotchy result.
Then I found amongst my goodies a small jar with something
called waterbased crystal clear high gloss glaze for finishing,
coating and perserving arts, crafts and decoupage. It had
a very strong sheen to it. The grass, the sky and the door
are painted with this mix, and so are the Angel and Kokopelli.
I used a mix of about about equal or slightly less acrylic
craft paint to the glaze and filled in the areas between the
outlines. When wet, the paint mix was just about the height
of the "leading", but when dry was flat with a nice sheen.
I punched a whole in the top and now I can hang it in the
window. I also made a small gingerbread man that can be used
as a Christmas ornament.
My next experiment will be with transparency sheets which
are a lot thinner than the margerine tub lids. I will keep
you informed.
