Video Tape Angel

For the longest time I have been trying to figure out what to do with those promo video tapes that arrive in the mail. I just could not throw them out. Then members of the family were moving and curtains had to be shortened and I was left with fabric remnants. One was a pure white one and now, well I have finally figured out what to do. So here we go:

Materials:

  • 2 video tapes
  • Fabric to cover video tapes
  • Fabric for dress (2 pieces 20x22" and 1 piece 20x4")
  • old sock for head
  • Styrofoam or foam core board
  • used tinfoil
  • glue gun
  • sewing needle and thread

Instructions:

  • Put the two video tapes together so that they are bottom heavy, i.e. the tape around the spool is on the bottom half of the video tape. Now glue the two video tapes together with the glue gun.
  • Cover the glued together video tapes with fabric. Pack them up like a parcel. Attach the fabric with the glue gun.
  • For the head I take a piece of an old pantyhose and cut off the toes and just where the leg begins. In the middle of this tie it with a piece of string and then fold it over to have a double thickness. Stuffed it with polyfill and tie it shut. Now take the upper part of an (old) acrylic knee sock. Fold the cuff over and insert the pantyhose head and tie it all up at the bottom.
  • Glued it to the top of the fabric covered video tapes. (Have a look at the graphic)

Dress

  • Take 2 pieces of fabric about 20 (length) x 22 (width) inches long. My bottom of the fabric was already hemmed as it was the part I had cut off the curtain.
  • Glue the 22 inch sides together, but only until about 4 inches from the top for the arm opening.
  • Now make a 1 inch hem at the top. Again I did this with the glue gun.
  • Run a gathering stitch along the top of each piece.
  • Insert the Video tapes with the head in-between the fabric circle.
  • Pull the threads tight and tie together on one side. Then do the same on the other side. This stabilizes the head and keeps it from wobbling.
  • There is a slit now that is the opening for the arms.
  • For the arms cut a piece of fabric 20 inches long and about 4 inches wide.
  • Fold the fabric so that you have four thicknesses and glue it shut on the back.
  • Tie a knot in the strip of fabric (the knot = the hands).
  • Center the arms on the angel and thread through the arm openings and glue to the back of the video tapes.
  • To embellish the angel I placed a string of silver beads around the head, a small heart over the heart and a star in her hands.

Wings

  • To make the wings cut out two hearts from Styrofoam or foam board and cover them with tinfoil. The more crinkled the better.
  • To attach the wings cut out a piece of Styrofoam or foam board about 2x1½ inches and cover that with tinfoil too and attached the hearts to it.
  • Now glue the dress on the back where the wings go to the video tapes and then glue on the wings at the same spot.
  • That's it. I left the face blank on purpose, but I guess you could create it with features.
