Video Case Cover Book Box

Marlies' Creative Universe

After creating various items out of worn-out video tapes I was left with the cardboard covers. Never being one to throw things out I came up with a creative use for them. I made them to look like a book, so now I can store things without giving away the fact that it is a storage box.

Materials

1 cardboard video box
piece of heavy card board
wrapping paper or contact paper
masking tape
glue

Instructions

  • cut the cardboard into 3 piece, the front, the back and the spine. The front and the back are the same size 4¾x8 inches. Round out 2 corners by placing a penny over them and tracing it, then cut it out. The spine is 1x8 inches.
  • Now lay the cardboard pieces on the table with a gap of at least the thickness of the cardboard between the piece.
  • Tape the pieces together with strips of masking tape on both sides.
Now place that piece on your wrapping paper and cut the wrapping paper 1-inch larger than the cardboard.
  • Spread an even coat of glue on the cardboard and place on wrapping paper and smooth out.
  • Make slits in the corner of the wrapping paper to make it fit around the rounded edges and apply glue to the wrapping paper and fold down over the cardboard.
  • Next cut a piece of wrapping paper 7¾x8-inches and glue it onto the inside. It will cover one half fully and the second half partially.
Now cover the video tape cover on the front and sides only. The back is not totally covered as it is not seen.
  • Then glue the covered box, opening toward the spine, centered onto the cover you just made.

Variation

  • I glued 2 video tape covers together and then covered them to make a dual book box. The width of the spine has to be adjusted here to 2-inches.
