Recently on a tiny spot on our planet's
surface, two schoolchildren put their minds together and conceived of a
plan. They had been studying the African nation of Uganda and their
studies had not satisfied their curiosity. They decided to find a
penpal in "The Pearl of Africa".
With an expectation conceived in child-like innocence, they made their request in a letter, and addressed it quite simply "to the people of Uganda". What can only be described as the hand of God next placed their letter in the national newspaper of Uganda under the caption "We Want Friends!" The name of this newspaper? New Vision. To date the children have received over five-hundred replies, and they continue to arrive. They soon realized that to answer every letter would require help, and so they turned to the community. Every Sunday I love to sing the "Peace Song". Every week I sing, "Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me". Spirit has answered this prayer in a way I might not ever have imagined. I feel truly blessed to have been the recipient and distributor of over a hundred of these touching letters. As an unforeseen result of the actions of two children, hundreds and hundreds of people from diverse cultures and distant lands are now reaching out to each other in a spirit of friendship and trust, searching for common ground. In the end, this is what will bring peace to our global village. In Isaiah, we find beautiful promises
of peace.
