I looked out the window of my sixth period class. It was
such a sunny day outside, there were birds chirping, flowers blooming,
it was the perfect day.
I smirked at my own corniness, and looked at the clock. 2:58. Come
on! Hurry up! Two more minutes and I'm outta here! I counted the seconds
until the second hand finally hit sixty. The bell rang, and I ran out of
the classroom. There were kids running down the halls cheering. I smiled.
The last weekend of the school year. School let out for the summer holidays
next week. Kids were already hyped up. I went to my locker, and got my
books. My gym clothes needed cleaning. I knew I needed a new pair of socks
for my uniform. The pair I was wearing had a tiny hole in the toe. I slammed
my locker shut, and hurried out to meet my friends.
I saw Connie waiting by the stairs to the school.
She was trying to fix her hair into a bun, without any success.
"Hey Con." I said. She looked up, and smiled.
"Hey, could you help me with this?" She asked. I
tried to put her hair up. She had long dirty blonde hair. My light brown
hair had been the same length a little while ago, until I cut it to my
earlobes. I had dyed red highlights. She refused to put any chemicals into
her hair besides shampoo and conditioner. I thought that was pretty stupid,
since I had let her colour my hair with red smelly markers in grade seven.
I tried to put some on her hair, but she shrieked and jumped up, causing
me to put a big red smear on her face. I thought it was funny as Hell.
"Where's Tash?" I asked, and piled her hair onto
her head. She shrugged.
"I dunno. She said she'd be here." I sighed. Tash
was in grade eight. A year lower then Connie and me. Although Connie was
still thirteen, she was put up a grade in kindergarten, and moved to grade
one. Tash and I have been friends for a long time. I became friends with
Connie when she came to our school in grade seven.
I saw Tash come running out of the school. I smiled. She still looked
as neat as a pin, even after school. Her uniform was all neatly pressed.
I looked down at my own uniform. As soon as school let out, I untucked
the blouse, and tied the sweater around my waist. The skirt pissed me off
to no end.
"Hi! Sorry I'm late! Stupid Craig and Will took
my English book and wouldn't give it back." She said. I narrowed my eyes.
"Neat time they do that, you tell me and I'll kick
their butts." I tld her. She smiled, and rolled her eyes.
"Okay, Xena." I gave out a Xena warrior cry. Connie
and Tash laughed. Connie snorts when she laughes.
"Heh heh, oink oink!" I said.
"Shut up!" She said.
"Snort snort snort!" I continued. She tried to hit
me, but I ducked.
"C'mon guys, we've got to go!" Tash said impatiently.
We nodded, and headed towards the bus stop. I saw Brett Blaje and a few
of his friends waiting near the bike racks. They were smoking, as usual.
"Hey, Sophie! Whussup?" Brett yelled to me. I didn't
look at him
"Nothing, airhead." I said. He pretended to look
insulted.
"Uh, you're making me cry, witch girl!" He said.
Him and his friends laughed. We both ignored them I really wanted to punch
him, but I knew I couldn't. We continued walking. They were still calling
things out to us.
"Hey, how many witches does it take to screw in
a lightbulb?" One of then yelled.
"I don't know!" Another said.
"None, they like to screw in the dark!" More laughter.
I rolled my eyes. That was the corniest joke I have ever heard.
"Why don't you shut up?" I heard a voice say from
behind us. I turned around. Isaac, Taylor, and Zac Hanson were standing
beside a red Camaro convertable.
Scene 1
Act ii
"Who's gonna make me? You?" Brett sneered. I could
tell that his confidence was gone. Isaac and Taylor were older then him.
"Yeah. We are." Zac said, trying to sound tough.
"I should've guessed that you three would be hanging
around witches. You're good little boy act was starting to get old." Brett
said, and him and his buddies left.
I turned to the Hanson's.
"Thanks. We owe you." I said. They smiled.
"No problem. You guys need a lift home?" Isaac asked.
I looked at the tiny Camaro.
"There's no way all six of us could ever fit in
there." I said. Connie nodded. Tash's face was red. She was a Hanson fan,
and still couldn't believe that I lived on the same street as them. I wasn't
best friends with them, but our parents were friends so we had spent a
lot of New Years and parties together. They were okay, as far as the 'boy's
next door' go. Isaac, who preferred to be called Ike, shrugged, and smirked.
"Tay and Zac could walk." He said. Taylor shot him
a dirty look.
"You could walk, and let me drive." He said.
Isaac shook his head.
"No can do little buddy. It's my car, remember?"
Taylor didn't answer.
"It's okay, we'll walk." Connie said.
"Yeah see you later, and thanks." I said. Zac gave
a mock salute.
"Hasta la vista, babies!" He said. I rolled my eyes.
We headed towards the bus stop, and waited for the bus.
Act iii
"...blessed be." We finished our meditation,
and blew out the candles. I sighed.
"We still don't have a fourth, we need the water
element." I said. Tash shrugged.
"Do you know anyone at our school, our Christian
school, who is willing to become wiccan?" She asked. I shook my head, no.
"I thought so."
"Maybe one of the Hanson's would be interested?"
Connie asked thoughtfully.
"No way, they're Christian all the way. I don't
think they'll ever do anything like that. Hanson wouldn't look good as
a gothic band." I joked. Tash rolled her eyes.
"Well, who else would do it?" She asked. I thought
of all the possible candidates.
"There's that new girl, Willow." Connie suggested.
"Hmmm, what do you know about her?" I asked.
"She's new, uh, she seemd pretty quiet, keeps to
herself mostly." Connie described her.
"I dunno. We'll have to get to know her better first."
I said. Tash nodded.
"Yeah, I mean, she could be some kind of freak."
I smiled.
"Like us?" I asked. She nodded, thoughtfully.
"Yeah. Like us."
Scene 2
Act i
"Hey, Zac, do you really think that Sophie and her
friends are witches?" Taylor asked me. I shrugged.
"I dunno. It would be pretty cool if they were."
I said, focusing on my video game.
"Yeah, but they go to a Christian school. I mean,
they have to wear those dorky uniforms and everything." He said. I smiled.
"Mom said that if we ever go to a public school,
that's where we'll be going."
"Eww... Uniforms. What a drag." I nodded. We sat
in silence. What if waht those guys were saying was true? Sophie never
seemed like a witch before.
"Uh, Tay? Do you wanna ask them if their witches?"
I asked him. He didn't answer at first.
"Yeah, okay. Where's Ike?"
"I dunno. Somewhere. The mall or something. He left
after we got home I think."
"Oh. Do you still wanna go?" He asked. I paused
the game and looked at him.
"Yeah, of course. Why not?" I said. Tay blushed
a little.
"Uh, I dunno. I mean, Ike's bigger then them, if
they, ya know, try any magic or something." He said, avoiding my gaze.
I laughed out loud.
"Tay, if they really are witches, then he won't
be able to do anything. They'll turn him into a frog or something." I said.
He smiled sheepishly.
"Yeah. You're right. Let's go. I think they're at
Sophie's house." We got up, and left. We walked since it was just down
the street. I rang the doorbell. I heard someone come running towards the
door. Sophie opened it. She seemed surprised to see us.
"Uh, hey Sophie. What's up?" Taylor asked.
"Uh, nothing. Come in." She said, and moved aside.
"TASH! CONNIE! CAN YOU CLEAN UP OUR, UH, HOMEWORK? TAYLOR AND ZAC
ARE HERE!" She yelled. I forgot how loud her voice could be. It was louder
then mine. A muffled reply came from upstairs. She turned back to us, ans
smiled.
"So, what's on your mind?" She asked. Tay looked
at the floor. I sighed. Connie and Tash came down the stairs.
"Well, we were wondering if you guys were, uh, witches?"
I asked. Sophie remained very calm. She looked at Natasha and Connie with
a sad expression.
"I was hoping it would never come to this. I'm really
sorry you two had to find out. I'm sorry, but you can never leave." She
said evenly.
Act ii
I was ready to blot for the door. Zac gulped.
"What?" He asked meekly.
"I'm sorry, but you two can never leave." She repeated.
I couldn't take it anymore. I ran, straight for the door. I could hear
them calling for me to come back, no way was I ever going back there! I
ran all the way home. I saw Ike's car in the driveway, which meant he was
home. I got in, and bolted the door shut behind me. I ran up to our room.
He was listening to music. I switched the stereo off.
"What'd you do that for?" He asked sternly. I tried
to talk, but I was out of breath.
"Sophie...Connie....Natasha....witches....Zac.....won't
let him .....go....." I gasped. He sat up.
"Tay man, calm down." He said. I took two deep breaths,
and tried to explain as quickly as possible what had happened.
"Sophie, Connie, and Natasha are witches!
Zac and I asked them if they were, and they said yeah, and that now that
we knew, we could never leave! Zac's still there! I ran out, but he's still
there!" I said. He looked at me like I was crazy.
"Look, Taylor, you must've misheard them. I'm sure
Zac's okay. Want me to call them?" He asked. I shook my head.
"You're not listening! They're witches! We've got
to call the police! They're going to sacrifice Zac to one of their Gods!"
I said. I didn't know whether or not it was true, but I had seen enough
movies to know that's what most witches do.
"Zac, I'm calling her house right now, okay?" He
asked. I sighed. Why doesn't he get it? He waited while the phone rang.
"Hello, Sophie? Yeah, it's me, Ike. Uh, look, Tay
just came home and he's all worked up. He's got this stupid idea that you
and your friends are going to sacrifice Zac to some God or something. Uh
huh, yeah. Oh, okay. Yep. We'll be right over." He hung up. Tehn turned
to me with a angry expression.
"Sophie said that you ran out of there so fast,
and when Zac tried to follow you, he slipped and hit his head. They're
really worried about him." Ike told me. "How could you have been so stupid,
Tay? They're not witches, you misheard her. Sophie said that she has no
idea what you're talking about and she'd never sacrifice anything to any
God. C'mon, we've got to go over there." He said, and left. I didn't move.
A few seconds later, he poked his head back in the door.
"Are you coming?" He asked.
"I'm never going back there." I said. He sighed,
and grabbed my arm.
"Let's go." He said, and dragged me out the door.
Scene 2
Act iii
He's such a baby. I dragged Taylor to Sophie's house.
He didn't even want to come onto the driveway.
"Tay, you wuss. C'mon!" I yelled, and yanked him
onto her property. He was yelling.
"Zac's gone, we've got to go get help!" He screamed.
We went up to the front porch, and I rang the doorbell. Sophie immeadiatly
answered. Her eyes were filled with worry.
"Oh, thank goodness. He's upstairs!" She said, and
led us up the stairs. Her bedroom door was closed. I wanted to run as far
away from there as possible, but Ike had a firm grip on my arm. She slowly
opened the door. My eyes widended at the sight of her room.
"Oh my god." I murmured. There were candle's everywhere!
I saw Connie and Tash laying on either side of her bed, and there was someone
on her bed. Ike and I inched forward. I screamed when I saw who was on
the bed.
"Zac!" Ike screamed. Zac was lying there, deathly
still. There was a red mark across his throat. Ike let go of me, and I
ran to the door, but Sophie blocked my way. She had closed the door, and
held the key in her hand.
"I'm sorry. But Zac's....gone. But don't worry,
you'll be seeing him really soon." She said, and smiled.
"You killed him?" Ike shrieked. She looked towards
the bed.
"Young. Innocent." She said. Connie and Natasha
were chanting something. It was almost rythmic. Ike stepped towards her.
"Let us go now!" He yelled.
"I'm sorry..." She said, and raised a pointed dagger.
Ike and I both stepped back, and bumped into something. We turned around,
and Zac was standing there, his stare glassy and distant.
"Tay....Ike....How could you leave me?" He rasped.
I screamed, and Ike and I both headed for the door. SOphie was still standing
there with the dagger. She looked us both in the eye.
"Boo." She said.
Scene 3
Act i
I couldn't hold it anymore, I laughed outloud. Sophie
started laughing too, and switched on the lights. Zac started to laugh,
and so did Tash. Pretty soon, the four of us were in hysterics. Isaac
and Taylor looked so bewildered.
"What the...?" Isaac said.
"You should've seen the looks on your faces!" Sophie
said. She was laughing so hard, tears were streaming down her cheeks.
"Oh my, lord....." Zac said, he was gasping from
laughing so hard.
"This was all a joke?" Taylor asked. Sophie
nodded.
"I can't believe it." Isaac muttered.
"You actually thought we were going to sacrifice
Zac?" I asked them. They were blushing like crazy.
"Uh, well, no, we just-" Isaac started.
"Admit it. You two were terrified. We got you good!"
Tash said, and laughed even harder.
"That was not funny! We seriously thought Zac was
dead!" Taylor said. Zac rubbed at his neck.
""Fake blood?" Isaac guessed. Zac smiled a toothy
grin.
"Yeah, Sophie has a ton of it from when she was
a dead cheerleader at your party last year." He said. We went around and
blew out all the candles. Isaac and Taylor sat down on the bed. They were
shocked.
"So, you guys aren't witches?" Taylor asked slowly.
Sophie sighed.
"We practice the religion of Wicca, which is essentially
witchcraft. But since we worship the God and Goddess, and they created
all things, we have no reason to want to do anyhting harm, or sacrifice,
because that's not what the point of Wicca is." She explained. I nodded.
"Besides. Every time you do a spell. It comes back
threefold." I said.
"But you're witches, right?" Taylor asked again.
"I guess you would call us witches, but it is a
religion no different then christianity or jewdism." Tash said. They both
nodded.
"That explains the candles." Isaac said. Sophie
looked around.
"I have tons of candles. We all do." She said. Taylor
looked at her necklace that she always wore, the star with a circle around
it
"Is that why you always wear that?' He asked. She
nodded.
"It's called a pentacle. We all have one." I said.
Isaac turned to Zac.
"Did you know about this?" He asked him accusingly.
"Yeah. Since Taylor ran out the door. Sophie, Connie,
and Tash started to laugh, and I knew what was up. They said that we should
play a trick on you two. I couldn't resist. Tay just looked so freaked!"
He said, and giggled. Isaac rolled his eyes. Taylor checked his watch.
"We'd better get home." He said. "We'll see you
later." They left, with Zac still giggling about managing to scare his
brothers out of their minds.
Act ii
"That was not funny!" Taylor told him once we had
left their house. Zac laughed some more.
"Yes it was." He said. I sighed. Then a thought
hit me.
"Hey, how would they know that you would come get
me, and we'd go back to Sophie's house?" I asked. They were both quiet
for a moment.
"Uh, I don't know. They just said, 'hey Zac. Let's
give them a scare.', and told me to put some fake blood on my neck and
to act dead." Zac said.
"And how come Sophie answered the door so quicky,
Right after you rang it?" Taylor asked. I was puzzled. Things sure were
strange.
"I wonder...." Zac muttered
Act iii
"Phew! That was close!" Sophie said, and snapped
her fingers. The candle light came back on, and the overhead light went
off. "I thought we were toast for sure."
"Yeah." I agreed. "Good thing you thought up making
it into a joke, and sending it to us." I told Connie. She smiled.
"I'm just so smart." She said We nodded. None of
us wanted the Hanson's to figure out what we could do. We didn't want anyone
to figure it out, for that matter.
"Tash, pass me my coke." Sophie said. I raised my
finger, and Sophie's coke floated across the room, right into her hand.
She smiled.
"Thanks. I can barely keep the candles burning.
I'm so tired after making the dagger appear." She said. She picked up the
dagger, and squeezed. Bright red blood seeped out of her hands as it disappeared
into thin air. She looked at the blood oozing from the deep cut in her
hand. Then shook her hand, and the blood, and cut was gone.
"Now." She said. "Where were we?"
The end
