"Stupid computer!" I screamed at the gray machine infront of me.
I pressed the enter key
The machine beeped.
"Arrgh!" I yelled, and pounded on the keyboard.
"You know, if dad saw you pounding on the computer, he'd have
a spaz." I heard a voice say from the doorway. I looked over, it was my
brother, Drake.
"Go away." I said. "It's not like dad's never hit the computer."
He sauntered in. He coundn't just walk, he had to strut about like he owned
the place.
"Yeah, but it's his computer." I ignored him, and continued to
try and make my history project save on my disk.
"Why isn't this working?" I whined. He came up and took a look
at the screen, the snickered.
"There's not enough space on the disk you moron." He said. I
went into the A:/ drive to check the disk space, and sure enough, there
wasn't sufficient space.
"Dammit." I muttered under my breath. He laughed, and left. I
sighed. Why does this always happen to me? How can he always make me feel
stupid? The telephone rang, I had to answer it because our parents were
out.
"Hello?" I asked.
"Is this the Lowski residence?" A male voice asked.
"Yes, who's this?" I demanded.
"Um, may I please speak to your brother?" He asked.
"Why can't you speak to me?" I demanded.
"Who is responsible for the household at present?" The voice
asked. I sighed.
"My brother. Hold on." I said, and put the phone on hold. "DRAKE!
PHONE!" I yelled down the stairs. I saw the red hold button go off. I was
curious, so I picked up the phone.
"Is this Drake Lowski?" The man asked.
"Yes, who is this?" My brother asked.
"Doctor Jakobs. I'm terribly sorry, but there's been an....accident.
You parents are here at the hospital." The voice said. I stifled a gasp.
My brother was silent.
"Are you joking?" He asked calmly.
"No. I'm serious. Can you come down to the hospital? They're
both in serious condition." I started to whimper.
"Aries? Are you on the line? Oh, Aries..." My brother said. I
started to cry. He was fighting back tears too, I could tell.
"Please, come down as quickly as possible." The man said. I hung
up, and ran downstairs. Drake looked shocked.
"Drake...." I said, and hugged him.
"Shhhh, Arrey...it'll be okay. We've got to get down to the hospital.
C'mon." He said, I nodded, and we left. He grabbed the keys to his car
and we went for the hospital.
Chapter 2
Waiting in vain
"Excuse me, we're looking for a Dr. Jakobs? Please, he said our
parents had been in an accident. They're names are Danni and Mike Lowski."
Drake said. I was crying, and holding onto his sleeve. The nurse checked
her sheets
"Oh, yes. The car wreck. Right down the hallway, room 207." She
said. We raced down the hallway. A doctor was just leaving room 207.
"Are our parents in there?" Drake asked. The doctor looked at
us. He seemed very tired.
"Are you Drake Lowski?" He asked. Drake nodded.
"You're mother's in there. You can't see her yet. You're father
is in critical condition, they're operating on him right now." He sighed,
took off his glasses and rubbed his eyes.
"I'm really sorry, but, it doesn't look too good for either of
them." He said. I choked, and closed my eyes. "They were in a car accident."
He continued. "A truck, the driver was drunk, and he crashed head on with
them. They rolled over, and the car is a wreak. I'm surprised we managed
to get them out of the car." He said, and sighed. "I guess there's no harm
in seeing your mother. But I must warn you, she's bleeding internally.
She conscious, has been throughout the whole thing." He said, and opened
the door. I stepped in behind Drake.
"Oh, mama." I whispered. Her normally pretty face was covered
with bruises. The side of her head was bandaged heavily. She opened her
eyes.
"My...babies." She said. We both rushed over to her. I was crying.
She winced.
"Mommy!" Was all I could manage.
"Shhh, it's okay, everything's fine." She said, but I could tell
she was crying. We just sat there for a few moments, holding eachother.
"Loves, you know that I'll always love you, even when I'm gone,
right?" She asked. We both nodded. "So you be good for your Uncle Marty
and Aunt Ellen, okay?" She said. Uncle Marty and Aunt Ellen were our godparents.
I realized then, that she knew she was dying. I heard the little machine
beside her start to beep more rapidly. She smiled softly. "It's time."
Was all she said. Doctor Jakobs and a nurse rushed in. Drake and I stepped
back, I was crying and screaming. Why did she have to go? It wasn't fair!
Drake was crying too, and I rarely saw him cry. The nurse turned to us.
"There's nothing we can do. She's gone, I'm sorry." She said.
I looked at my mother's lifeless form. How can this happen? It wasn't supposed
to be this way, how can my mother die? I'm only fourteen, It's not fair....
"Let's go outside Arrey." Drake said, and we went slowly outside.
I felt odd, I wasn't crying anymore, my face was tear stained, but I wasn't
crying. I know she's in a better place now. Another doctor came up to Dr.
Jakobs, and was quietly and rapidly talking to him. The doctor nodded,
and rubbed his eyes. I immediately knew something was wrong. He walked
up to us slowly.
"I'm...sorry. You're father, he isn't going to make it. I know
this must be incredibly hard for you." He said. I buried my face in Drake's
chest, and cried softly. No, not daddy too....I sat down in one of the
hospital chairs. Dr. Jakobs was talking to Drake. I couldn't hear what
they were saying, it was all a blur of colour and sound. Nothing matters
anymore, my mother is dead, and my father is dying.
Chapter 3
File Deleted.
We had been at the hospital for almost an hour, and they still
wouldn't let me see daddy. Finally, I stood up, and walked right up to
the doctor.
"Excuse me, I would like to see my father." I said. He looked
at me sadly.
"I'm sorry, we cannot allow that yet." He said. I looked at him
with eyes that could kill.
"Now you listen. I'm not going to take any more of this bullshit
from you. My dad's dying in there, and you would even let me see him? What
the hell is this?" I yelled, and raced down the hallway. I found my father's
room, and rushed inside. What I saw nearly made my heart stop.
My father was hooked up to almost ten tubes. He was a ghostly
pale. I slowly walked up to him.
"Daddy?" I whispered. He didn't react. I sat down on the bed
beside him. I reached out and touched his hand. It was freezing cold.
"Oh, daddy. I'm sorry. Why did this have to happen?" I asked
outloud, but no one was listening. I heard a steady beeping, not unlike
the one in my mother's room. I looked at the box. It was flatline. I stood
up suddenly, how long had he just been lying there, dead like this? Before
I came in, that's for sure. I got up. Drake and Dr. Jakobs opened the door.
"Aries, what are you doing?" Drake asked. I looked at him.
"Daddy's...dead. He was dead when I got here, but I didn't realize
it until now." I murmured. Dr. Jakobs checked the instruments. He shook
his head.
"The wire's weren't connected to the main desk, that's why no
one realized it." He said.
"I'm sorry." I closed my eyes.
"Enough of your sorry's!" I yelled. I couldn't help it, I was
furious. "If your goddamn machines were working properly, my dad might
still be alive!" He looked at me with a very sad expression.
"There was nothing we could have done for him anyway. He was
dying. I don't think he was in any final pain." He said. "I can recommend
a good doctor for you, who specializes in...the wellbeing of the family
members of tragic accident victims." I shuddered bitterly.
"I am not crazy. I don't need a shrink." I said, and walked out.
I sat down at one of the hospital chairs, and put my head in my hands.
I wasn't sad anymore, just angry. Why? Why did they have to go and die
on us? I started to sob. I looked up, and noticed a young boy look over
in my direction. He had long blonde hair. I knew I had seen him before
somewhere, but I couldn't remember exactly. He walked towards me, and sat
down in the chair beside mine.
Chapter 4
Choices
"Are you okay?" He asked, his chocolate brown eyes filled with
worry. His face looked about twelve or thirteen, but he was pretty tall,
so I couldn't tell how old he was.
"No." I replied bitterly.
"Do you want me to get you a doctor or something to drink?" He
asked. I laughed, sourly.
"I've had enough of doctors and their lame ass 'I'm sorry's to
last me a lifetime." I said, and looked at him. He looked mildly hurt.
I tried to smile. "But a drink would be nice." He nodded, and went over
to the pop machine. There was a family of about five kids sitting over
by the pop machines. He asked a woman, who looked to be his mom or something,
and he went and got me a drink. Why is he being so nice? I don't even know
him. He came back with a pepsi in his hand.
"Here. This'll make you feel better." He said, and handed me
the drink.
"Thanks. I wish it were that easy." I said. Ooops. Didn't want
to do that. Just opened the door for him to ask me what happend.
"Your welcome." He said. That was it. He didn't ask me any quesitons.
I nodded over to the group of people by the pop machines.
"Is that your family?" I asked. He nodded.
"Yeah. Pretty big, isn't it?" He asked. I nodded.
"There's just me and my brother, and my parents-" I choked on
the mention of them. Now it's just me and my brother.
"Do you want to talk about it?" He asked.
"Do I have a choice?" I asked sarcastically. He looked me in
the eye.
"You always have a choice." He said. I smiled.
"I don't even know your name." I said. He smiled softly.
"I'm Zac." He said. Zac. Sounded simple enough.
"Aries." I said. He looked puzzled.
"Excuse me?"
"My name. It's Aries." I said. I was used to people's reactions
when it came to my name.
"Oh. That's cool." He said. "Wasn't Aries a god or something?"
He asked I nodded.
"Yeah. The Greek God of War." I said. I always wondered why I
was called that. Why not Aphrodite, or Venus? Why Aries, the god of war?
"Whoa." He said. I smiled, or tried to. I didn't want to tell
him why I was here, so I asked him what he was doing here.
"What are you doing here?" I asked. He obviously noticed my changing
of the subject, but he didn't mention it.
"My little sister, Jessica is having her tonsils taken out."
He said.
"And you're whole family came?" I asked. He nodded.
"Yeah. My parents try to make everything a family affair." He
said. I looked at the ground at the mention of his parents. Mine hadn't
been gone two hours, and I missed them terribly.
"You know," He said softly. "ignoring it won't make it go away."
I looked at him sharply.
"What do you know about it?" I asked. He sighed.
"I know, that you're pretty peeved off about something, but that
you won't tell me what. That obviously means it's something big." He said.
I nodded.
"Yeah." I said. He sat there for a moment, waitng for what else
I was going to say. "I always have the choice, right?" I asked him. He
nodded. "Well, that's a load of bull." I said. He just raised his
eyebrows.
"How so?"
"Well, what happened tonight, I had no choice in. I didn't want
it to happen." I said.
"It wasn't your choice to be made." He said simply. I thought
about that for a long time.
That was so true. Who was I to say who could live and who should die?
I turned to him.
"My parents, they died tonight in a car accident." I said. He
nodded.
"That sucks." He said. I was almost, happy. He hadn't said I'm
sorry. That meant so much to me.
"Yeah. It really does." I said. We sat there for a little while
longer. His mother motioned for him to go over there. He turned to me.
"I have to go. I hope things work out." He said. I nodded.
"Thanks. I...." I couldn't finsih my sentence.
"Yeah?"
"Just, thanks. You really, helped me open my eyes." I said. He
nodded, and waved
"See you later." He said, and jogged off. I smiled, and this time,
I really felt like smiling.
Chapter 5
Zac the angel.
"What was that all about?" My older brother Taylor asked. me.
I shrugged.
"Someone who needed cheering up." I said. He smiled.
"You always do that. Cheer people up I mean." He said. I smiled.
"I try my best." I said. He nodded. I looked over at my sister,
who was being wheeled out of the operation room. And thought about just
how lucky I really was. I thought about Aries, and how I knew I would be
seeing her soon.
