The Story...
Voodoo Garden Blessing Stix are funky folk art made by French Quarter outsider artist, Rosemary Basil aka Rosalita Margarita de Malabar on her balcony in New Orleans. In the psychedelic 60's, this bohemian artist raised two daughters while working jobs from seamstress to tourguide to librarian. She lived in 20 places in 20 years then moved to New Orleans where, inspired by the local Voodoo and Mardi Gras cultures, she began to paint and create in a fervor and became a recluse due to illness and disappointments.

Her art has been described as:
"Dorothy meets Dali... Tim Leary meets James Brown...child-like innocence with surreal surprises, neon primitive,acid funk, French Quarter hysterical history and a taste of Mardi Gras madness."
Rose says, "I don't know what I'm doing or why but I need to do it. The French Quarter has become a tourist trap, so I just DREAM & BELIEVE."
She uses found junk and stuff from the courtyard and garden to create one of a kind plant jewelry that may be used to adorn a plant, as a wall hanging, noisemaker or sun catcher. The voodoo inspiration comes from New Orleans where superstition and religious practices often result in gris gris, mojo hands and other objects as tools to ward off evil spirits. She paints in her garden balcony studio only at dusk or under the moonlight when the summer air is cool.
If you are visiting New Orleans and stop by the Balcony above the A&P in the French Quarter, you may see her at work.

Rose believes that a gardener who takes the time to treat their plants to plant jewelry is a caring sensitive person who believes "plants have rights too" and they will thank you for that respect by becoming hardy and prolific! But there is much more than meets the eye. These Stix are about entertainment and will bring out the child in anyone. Just try it! Well, I just want you guys to know Rose's voodoo stix are TOO MUCH!!!
They are such a cool little piece of folk art. Totally original, fun and
very special because of the dear lady who made them! Thanks Rose. I will
treasure it and try not to put any bad whodoo voodoo on anyone or
anything....just good incantations(except for garden pests)!!! I have my
voodoo blessing mist brewing in the hot midwestern sun....so tomorrow is
the day that the leaf gnawers, stem saboteur and blossom bruisers will be
quaking(all 4,6,8 or no legs should be shaking) I can feel the chanting
starting to rise from the pit of my belly!!! Of course being here in
Chicaga we have a little different incantation

Hi rose,
I got home from work today and there sticking out of my mail box was your
tube, ay yi yi what a wonderful surprise. I am now the proud owner of the
only Rose Voodoo stick in NEW Zealand. It is sitting in a pot on my
verandah by my door so that I can see it when i am in my lounge and
kitchen/dining area, also it is the first thing visitors see when they come.

Hello Miss Rosalita and thank you for the stick. It was so kind of you to give me one when you knew I was ill. It has certainly brightened my life so I had to share this story.
I was scheduled for the surgery so took the Voodoo stik with me. Well you know they looked at me strange at first but soon they started laughing and calling me that Voodoo lady! I made everyone smile and it came back threefold, THANK YOU! Btw, they got all the cancer!
