Star of Love

March 14, 1999

Miaka polished off the fifth box of chocolates. "Oishiii!" (1)

Taka sighed in relief that he had bought five. He remembered Miaka's prodigious appetite when they first met and fell in love. It had diminished to a more typical once her high school entrance exams were over, and they met again.

He was no longer Tamahome, a character in the ancient Chinese book- Shi Jin Ten Chi Sho (2) But a real person Taka Sukunami. Suzaku granted Miaka's wish for them to be together by sending Him out of the book to be reincarnated .

They met again because Taka had the same college major as Miaka's older brother, Keisuke. In the book world they were only two years apart, but in the real world he was about three years older. When they met again Taka couldn't remember his past as Tamahome. After Miaka and he returned to the book and saved both worlds from a would be god- Tenku, Taka remembered.

After the battle was over Miaka decided to drop out of high school and got married to Taka. (3) It was hard in the beginning, both of them working low paying jobs in Tokyo until he finished the bachelor's degree in ancient Chinese History. Then they returned to his parents farm about 100 miles north of Tokyo.

They worked hard here too, but at least there were true rewards from that hard work- the rice and wheat crops had been very good , this first year in the country. They made a good profit. Miaka worked the hardest of all of the whole family. Taka believed she was entitled to however much she wanted to eat, especially now that she was pregnant as well. It was their first child. He did tease her, though, about the return of her enormous appetite.

"Is that one or three babies in there, Miaka?"

Miaka glared back at him. " Just for that, I'll fix gourmet tonight." She turned her head up to woodbeam ceiling of the farmhouse. Refusing to look at Taka.

Uh oh, he had put his foot in it this time. That meant Miaka would deliberately cook badly and stare at him in silence until he ate it. Miaka's cooking was tolerable to decent if she carefully followed the reciepe, but awful if she got distracted. "Sumimasen Miaka. Watashi no baka desu." (4)

"Just so you know it." Miaka teased. "Taka …I forgive you." They kissed and began to undress each other, until the shoji behind them slid open-

"Oh! Gomen nasai!"(5) was Taka's mother. As was more typical in the countryside they lived in the home of his parents. The farmhouse and land would belong to them after Taka's parents died.

Taka and Miaka jumped apart, and Miaka grabbed her shirt and bra, quickly covering herself. "Sumimasen! They blurted out to his mother.

Sukunami Okasan(6)smiled knowingly, and nodded "Miaka chan this should help with the morning sickness. It worked for me when I was carrying Taka." She waited until Miaka got her shirt all the way on before handing the box of mixed herbs to her.

"Arigato gozimasu."(7) Miaka bowed to her mother-in-law. Sukunami Okasan was not so shocked about the marriage as Miaka's parents had been. She was very happy when they had decided to live on the farm. So many young people left for Tokyo and never returned. Taka's younger siblings planned on careers in the city, and had no desire to stay in the country. So it was such a blessing to see Taka and Miaka ready to take on farming with such enthusiasm. The whole town seemed to be happy to see some young faces among them. And Miaka soon worked her usual charm among them as well. Almost everyone in the village liked her. She worked hard and was kindheated.

"Well, I'm off to the town committee meeting. You two should join now. They know you are staying, starting a family. No one will look at you strange now."

Taka smiled and nodded at his mother. "Hai, Kasan.(8) After the baby is born." Taka whispered to his mother, " don't think Miaka could sit that long without eating, until then."

Sukunami Okasan laughed. "Hai! So desu! Well, until then. " She stepped out the front door. She waved to them standing in the doorway when she reached the road into town.

Taka stood behind Miaka in the doorway waving back. Snow lightly covered the ground. Taka put his arms around Miaka. She leaned back against him. "Sometimes I wish that the others could be reincarnated too, Taka."

"Hai. I miss them. I wonder what happened to them in the book world. I hope they had happiness like us."

"And happiness in the future too."

"Hai." Taka let his hands rest on the still small rounding of Miaka's belly, where their baby grew.

A flurry began.

"The radio said this would probably be the last snow this season."

Taka smiled, "Let's enjoy it for a while then."

Miaka closed her eyes, feeling the beauty of the moment. "Hai." She said softly.
