Footnote 25:

A fuller explanation is needed here of the instruments in a caterpillar band. The music, it has already been explained, sounds like a jazzy version of Rock and Roll, but what must be explained is the instruments. In Remiel's band, just for example, Daz plays the drums. The principle of drums does not change much species to species, although caterpillars had a larger range of drum pitches and tones, so the drum section of a Caterpillar band would sound very African, that is if caterpillars had human ears. Luther played the Tinder, a wind instrument similar to a tenor saxophone, but without as much bass, the tone of the Tinder was similar to that of a deep clarinet, and was usually an optional extra for a band like Remiel's. Wilson played what can only really be described as a guitar, this version had five strings, and a few more frets than the guitars we know, but the principle was the same. Cornelius played a bass that was not really a bass guitar, and not really a double bass but contained elements that linked it to both of them. It was larger than a bass guitar, but was held like the guitar, usually. It could however be played upright and bowed, if the piece needed bowing. Remiel just sang, and microphones don't change much between species.
