Out West in October 1996

In October 1996 I took a three-week road trip to the southwestern United States, going through Oklahoma City, El Paso, Albuquerque, and Denver before heading home. War Pony and I covered over 4,600 miles all together. What a great trip it was.

In El Paso I met up with Jim Millican, who lives there, and Chris Hayhurst, who was visiting from Columbus, Ohio. We went to Alamagordo and White Sands National Monument in New Mexico, which is where this photo was taken. Jim's on the left, Chris is in the middle. My mind was doing back flips because all that "snow" was really sand and it was about 60 degrees.

Then I continued north along the eastern edge of the Rockies to Albuquerque and Santa Fe. From there I headed up to Pagosa Springs, Colorado with the goal of going through Wolf Creek Pass (way up on the great divide...). I had to buy chains, in Pagosa Springs (where they weren't cheap, but maybe they wouldn't be cheap anywhere, I dunno) and then learn how to put them on, which was an adventure in itself. But I got through the pass. This photo is of me and the truck at the top of the pass.

Didn't need the chains the rest of the trip. In fact I still have them.... bet there's something I can do with them. ;-)
