Eremerus (foxtail lily). A perennial that sends up long, fluffy flower plumes in early summer. This flower is only about 8 inches long; the flowers seem to be larger (up to 3 feet) for the varieties that are less cold hardy.

Bright edge yucca. A smaller yucca that only grows to about 18 inches tall, but sends up attractive 4 foot flower stalks in summer.

Purple stokesia (Stoke's aster). Flowers in mid-summer and likes sun.

Orange Punch canna lily. The flowers hang down pendant-like instead of being upright like most other cannas.

Willow leaf helianthus. A very tall perennial sunflower that blooms in the fall. This one grows more than 12 feet tall, and goldfinches love the seeds.

Obedient plant (Physostegia virginiana). A fall-flowering native that comes in purple or white. There's also a vareigated variety. The common name "obedient plant" results from the fact that the flowers will remain in place after being moved.

Angel's Trumpet (Brugmansia). A tropical shrub that has long, pendulous, trumpet shaped flowers in the summer. The flowers are very fragrant at night. Not winter hardy in our area, so it's cut back hard and brought inside to overwinter in the basement. This plant grew from a 2 inch cutting in the spring.

Monkshood (Aconitum napellus) A perennial shrub that grows two to six feet high, with dark green leaves that are shiny on top and lighter underneath. Helmet-shaped flowers, which bloom in summer or fall, are usually purplish blue. All parts of the plant are poisonous.
