you said it

Welcome to the page where I have compiled a selection of notes people have emailed me, left in the guestbook, etc. I think it's important that I include other viewpoints here besides my own.

Let me remind you, I did not write these, I do not necessarily support them, I am simply providing you with another opinion. IF you would like to read what I think, then you are looking for this page. The following are REAL UNEDITED EXCERPTS from my inbox or my guestbook. (Could I make up stuff this good?)

It is so easy to complain about the weather or the taxes in Canada but move away and you'll find yourself complaining about the airfare to get back.

I'd like to commend your webpage, it's really funny. I have to be honest, though, and let you know I'm from the United States, but don't let that taint this letter for you, please. My wife is Canadian, currently living in Kingston and I will be joining her shortly from here, Anchorage, Alaska. When I met her there in Canada, I really fell in love with the place and the people, as well as her, while I was there. There's definitely a different feeling and I really noticed and appreciated that different feeling.

"I would now like to apologize for all the stupid things that my fellow Americans say and do that seems to cause this awkward rivalry. I'm soon to be applying for citizenship there, causing a dual citizenship and I'll be very proud of both. The thing that gets to me, though, is that I have never seen or heard any of my friends, acquaintances or any strangers say anything derrogatory about Canadians and yet there are webpages devoted to USA-bashing (although I agree much of it is deserved). I think as two neighboring and politically friendly countries we give and take equally. We should be thankful we don't have a hostile or warlike people on either border. But, at the same time, your country should be thankful that, due to our large military, it relieves you the responsibility of having one, thereby allowing you to afford the wonderful things we lack such as the health care system.

"I wish there were ways to silence this little war between all of us. It starts with us being less ignorant and pig headed and you being less defensive...although there is much pride in that defense, and I admire that. There is no solution, I guess. But I guess I'd just like to let a few Canadians know that not all Americans tote guns, laugh at our northerly neighbors, like Howard Stern, like nuclear weapons or war of any kind, assist in drive by shootings and, instead, are quietly jealous of a lack of heritage that the rest of the world nurtures....that we are stuck being the largest military, wanting to keep the peace without looking like idiots of hypocrisy. Thank God for laughter!"

"Hey, I love your page... All my friends call me over obsessive when it comes to Canada, but I just feel I'm patriotic.....hell, I have to make up for the other 27 million or so who aren't, or just don't show it. I don't like to bash the Amercians, but we all need a little fun once in a while ! I'd just like to metion an article I read in school.......'bout Canadian-American relations. Here goes....." Americans think that ALL Canadians live in igloos, wear snowshoes to work and have a moose tethered in their backyard...." That stereotype has been going around forever ! But still the Americans think that Canada is a part of the States! God help us if that ever happens !!! We shouldn't need the UN or anyone else to have to tell us that Canada is the best country in the world to live in. It's time that we showed pride in our country and flaunt it even just a little. Canada does ROCK !!!! I thank you for showing the rest of the country and the world."

"I'm currently living in Norfolk, Virginia (an armpit as cities go). I've got my flag and Maple Leaf Tattoo but I miss Canadian microbrews and polite manners. When I die, I hope the worms that chew on my carcass are Canadian ones."

"Great website. I recently visited Montreal, and I completely fell in love with the city and my waitress. Canadians have a lot to be proud of!"

"What sort of gets me is where all of the U.S. Canada hate began. I have been on internet chatrooms where there always seems to be one person of non-U.S. citizenship that bashes the United States. I am not saying htat the U.S. is all that it is cracked up to be, but you must contemplate a lot of things. If the U.S. stopped playing to big brother (or sister however you wish to see it) to other countries, and traded with no one (though ppl don't know this the U.S. does NOT have to trade with anyone...we have enough resources as it is), and quit meddling in other ppl's businness...where would the rest of the world be? The U.S. is not the best place on Earth but you must grant to us that we do a lot for other countries that is not needed, and if you all of a sudden cut off the U.S. from the rest of the world then who would be the economic breadbasket that would be able to supply all needs of other countires without ever being paid back??"

"I read your sermon and have seen the Anti-Canadian website. Although their site specifically states that it is a satire, and is not to be taken seriously, it expresses the general attitude of most Americans - that Canada is somehow inferior to the U.S. The truth is that the Americans are very afraid of finding out that Canada is indeed the best country in the world overall. This is why they spend time and energy bashing our country. In fact, for every pro-Canadian website out there, I'll bet there are 10 anti-Canadian sites. Given this situation, I believe that you SHOULD create a page on your website satirising the U.S. Even something as simple as "The Top 10 Reasons Canada is Better Than the U.S.A." would work. "All in good fun", as the Americans have told us countless times. I believe that our politeness and hesitation to engage in conflict is a sign that Canadians, in general, are a great deal more mature and refined than the 280 million redneck, gun-carrying cowboys to the south. However, in this case, it's time we gave credit (or lack thereof) where credit is due - Vive Le Canada, Le Pays D'Or!"

"Did you see the NHL All-Star game Jan.18, 1998? If you you did maybe you listened to the Canadian national anthem. Bryan Adams was singing it and we forgot a line. Oooops!!!! Well right after the BOOBOO The television cut to Mark Messier and Wayne Greztky standing on the ice. Mark leans over to Wayne and says "He forgot the words". Mark has a chuckle over this and Wayne is tring to keep his cool. Now can you imagine going out infront of million of people and then forgetting to the words to your own national anthem? I hope it never happens to me. I hope Bryan gets a chance to sing again and hopefully this time he sings the Canadian national anthem in its entirety(sp). But I must say this is not the worst redition of the Canadian anthem. A couple of years ago there was alady who was singing it. She just stopped in the middle of it and said I don't know the words. Can you imagine?? Well people in the stadium especially the umpires and players could not believe it. But another time it happened. This time it was in a CFL game. During the one time experiment of having American CFL teams. This lounging singer was singing O Canada from sheet music but ontop of that he was singing it to the tune of O Christmas Tree. Yikes. i think we are going to have to start singing o Canada more often. I know many people in Canada do not know our own anthem. So it is hard to get extremely upset at Americans who make mistakes. Hopefully Canadians learn more than the American anthem in their lifetime. Many know it better than the Canadian one."

"Nice page, was just looking around for some info on Canada for a neighbours kid. I spent the first 13 years of my life in Alberta and then my family moved to Wisconsin. I cant say I dislike Wisconsin, in fact I love it here its alot like Canada and there are many suprising little facts about it. For one Wisconsin consitently has lower rates of property and violent crime than Manitoba and Ontario, Wisconsin's cities are great. The people have alot of pride in the state and take care of it, I like that and unfortunately see little of it elsewhere...Canada or America. Its also very beautiful here and beauty tends to create loyalty to a place, the same thing goes for Canada (though many dont show it unfortunately). But anyways I will always have Canada in my heart (as well as the passport :) so keep up the good work. Oh, and dont condone the America-bashing that I see here, especially on your "you said it" section. Its really...Un-Canadian and if you actually get down here you will find that Americans love Canucks and we always get a good reception. Unfortunately I cant say the same for Americans in Canada, and thats a bit sad. Cheers!"

"This is a fantastic page. I will just give you this note on a excerpt from Live Regis and KathieLee when they interviewed Leslie Nielsen. This is not word for word.
REGIS: "Well more and more interesting things keep appearing on your Bio sheet. You lived in a log cabin by the Arctic Circle?"
LESLIE "Yes"
At this time Kathie Lee's jaw is hanging open and she is in complete shock upon hearing that. But in 1920s most people were just getting eletricity. Not everyone lived in million dollar homes like KathieLee does. I guess I feel that some people still think we do live like that and others cannot. I should tell you that Americans are not the only ingorant ones. When I went to visit my cousins over in Ireland in '94 I met people who barely had a clue where CANADA was. I asked by some of cousin's friends were I was from. I said Canada. A couple of blank stares. Someone saying my Dad went to Toronto once. Do you live close to Toronto? I said no. Then to explain where I lived was immpossible. I have now learned in order to make people understand where I live, I must carry a map around and some general information and pictures on Canada. From now on I will be an ambassdor for CANADA."
