Advice on
Chatting
Joining a chat line or IRC Channel .... remember patience is
required!
When you join a chat line for the first time make sure you type
in a general greeting. Saying hi everyone will probably do, and
don't be too impatient to get a reply. Sometimes the servers can
be busy and replies can be slow. Other times, users may have a few
other replies to make for the existing conversation before they
are able to say hello to you.
Security
Remember that the information you send out on a chat line is
not secure, and you cannot guarantee the identity of the people
you talk to. Never give out personal information such as your
address, phone number or other sensitive details on a chat line or
IRC channel. If you do arrange to meet someone IRL (in real life)
that you have met online make sure you do so in a safe public
place. They may not turn out to be exactly what you expected from
their online chatting!
Emoticons
Ever wondered what all those punctuations
marks used by chatters means? Emoticons
are listed here!. There seem to
be some really obscure ones... worth a look and a laugh
(especially for the Simpsons fans!). Also a page
of acronyms... to help you work
out what it means when someone types *lol* or *lmao*
Quickies
Jitter
(USA) Ba
Snakk (Norway) OzChat
(Australia) Virtual
Irish Pub (Ireland ... a bit obvious isn't it!)
