Emma Marie Uttley – 1860-1862

The obituary of Matilda (Girling) Uttley tells us that she and Jonathan had three children that died as infants. Emma Marie was one of these three but the other two remain unknown.

There are other family instances for the name Emma. The 1851 Census of Burgh St Peter in Norfolk tells us that Jonathan's older sister Eliza and her husband William A. Baley have a daughter Emma, age 5. The 1841 Census of nearby Aldeby in Norfolk lists a daughter Emma for Jonathan's uncle James Uttley and his wife Susannah.

Baptism

[St John]
The original church of St. John the Evangelist
erected on the present site in 1861 and
replaced by the present church October 1st, 1894

From the records of Baptisms performed at St John The Evangelist Church (Anglican Church of Canada) in Berlin, Canada West (1858-1872) [published by Waterloo Wellington Branch, Ontario Genealogical Society, Kitchener 1985]:

                  Emma Maria
Date of Birth: Nov 13, 1860
Date of Bapt: Aug 17, 1862
Parents: John and Matilda Attley
Trade: sawyer
Abode: Elmira, Waterloo County
Sponsors: Jane Walker & Parents
Clergy: E.R. Stimson
Jonathan and Matilda's daughter 'Emma M.' appeared just once in the 1861 Census. Who was Jane Walker? It appears that Jane required the sponsorshop of her parents for this baptism.

Death

Life for Emma was short. The Burials index of St John's Church records:

                      ATTLEY, Emma Maria
   Age next birthday: 2 yrs
   Born: Elmira
   Buried: 7 November 1862
   Minister: E.R. Stimson

We do not know where Emma was laid to rest. In Elmira would be the most likely.
