Gordon Robert Uttley was born April 26, 1885. He was the fourth of eight children and the fourth son of John Robert Uttley and Catherine (nee Birmingham).
The birth is not found in the Ontario Birth Indexes of the day. The births of his older brothers are not found there either, so the family was consistent at avoiding the registration of births. The date of April 25, 1885 is found in the 1901 Census.
In his early life he was known as Robert Gordon Uttley. The 1891 Census lists Robert G. as a son of age 5. Ten years later in 1901 the Census again lists Robert G. as a son at age 15.
