She was the fourth child and second daughter of Nathan Uttley and Lucinda Randall.

The Weslayan Baptisms for Waterloo County record the birth and baptism of Mary Jane Uttley in Volume II, p353 in 1867. Her younger sister Henrietta and her cousin John Herbert Uttley were baptised at the same service,

Mary Jane was married just a month and a half before her older brother John Robert married Catherine Birmingham in Elmira.
Sarah Cook, the witness, was Mary Jane's older sister Sarah Ann Uttley. Sarah Ann and her husband Robert Cook acted as witnesses at the John R's wedding.
Why were they married in Hawkesville? Nathan was living with the Birmingham in-laws outside Crosshill in 1881 and Hawkesville is not far away. In 1881 Mary Jane was living in Elmira at the home of Peter and Anna Bowman and their three young kids as a servant.
