“to venus and back” The New Double Album by Tori Amos
Here is a review, by me, for each of the songs on this CD.
Bliss: After I listened to Bliss, my reaction was WOW! I hadn’t heard a new Tori song in a while, it was so nice to hear her voice again. The chorus is so catchy, especially when she adds on the “4 horse engine with a power drive.” It is a very powerful song, it shoves its way through the door and makes you realize, dang, this is a good song! In concert, it sounds terrific also. What I like most about the song? The way she says Bliss...it’s Blise not Bliss! Very Tori.
Juarez: Yuck. This song gets added to my itty bitty list of Songs I Don’t Like, which also contains Hotel and Black-Dove. I just don’t care for it. It is much like Hotel, and I can’t stand it. The ending is a contrast from the beginning. This is a song you could do some evil to, it just has that texture to it.
Concertina: Isn’t this a gorgeous song? It’s much softer then Datura or Bliss, but still draws you in. You can’t help but say “Concertina Concertina” with her. It’s a happy song. The non piano sounds in the back are very smooth and nice.
glory of the 80’s: I really love this song, but in a way it seems a little unfinished. I love how she says “I don’t find that remotely funny.” The music overpowers her voice, and that is unusual for a Tori song. There needs to be equality. The lyrics are really something else though, and I do love to listen to this song. As you listen to it, you can just imagine Tori walking around in some big boots on the streets of my hometown, Los Angeles.
Lust: Boring. Boring. Boring. A song to go to sleep by. I can’t understand what she is saying.
suede: This song has the neatest backgroup noises! It’s a very clever song, it kinda slides in between cracks slowly and grabs you and pulls you in. “It’s very slow, but it is a very awake song. The change in it, to go to “hey little sister...” is also very appealing. This song is screaming Tori all over it.
Josephine: Very strange song. The lyrics are much like “Yes, Anastasia” but the music is almost like a slow version of “she’s your cocaine.” It would be a good song to slow dance to. Her voice is heavenly, going up and down.
riot proof: My favorite song on the CD. It makes me move my shoulders. I connect very well with it. Cut into three sections, with an so wonderful ending of “on the bomb.” I love it when she says “as she goes to the movie show” and “the sun is warming, my man is moistening.” I am a happy person when I hear riot proof. I heard it in concert, and I was the happiest girl in the whole world, except she didn’t play the “on the bomb” part.
Datura: This song is so crazy! I enjoy it very much, but it is a very odd song. Very un-Tori. I wonder if she really memorized all of those words that she speaks. I like the piano in it. I works very well with the drums and her voice. The second half, though it works, is a little too much.
spring haze: See, Tori didn’t forget about her piano. This is beautiful song. I love the part when she says “waiting for Sunday to drown.” Her voice is very mature.
1,000 Oceans: I put this perfect song in a whole different category then any other song on this CD. When I first listened to my 1,000 Oceans single, I was crying like a baby. I did not know that there could be a song as beautiful as this is. Her voice sounds so vulnerable, like she putting herself out there to take any blow to protect her love. It will surely be a classic.
As a whole CD in general, it might not have that “girl with a piano” thing going for it, but still, this CD is a masterpiece. You have to give it that respect with listening to just one line of “1,000 Oceans.” I don’t believe I’ll be getting bored with it for a very long time. If you have not heard this CD yet, I highly recommend it.
