If you're even remotely interested in Home Cinema you'll no doubt have come across the term Aspect Ratio, this is the ratio of image height to image width. Until recently all televisions were manufactured to conform to the 'standard' aspect ratio of 4:3, incidentally this ratio is also known as 'Academy Ratio'.

However, with the advent of Widescreen televisions there is a growing trend of screening programmes and films in their original aspect ratio. Many of you will be familiar with 'letterboxed' films, especially Home Cinema fans. There are many variations in aspect ratio as there are names for them... e.g. CinemaScope, PanaVision, WideScreen etc.

The subject of aspect ratio's can be a confusing one, especially when upgrading your TV as I did. What I wanted was a quick and easy way to determine the size of a 'letterboxed' image on screens of varying sizes. To this end I have come up with a table which dispenses with 'number crunching' and just gives you the end result...

All measurments are approximate only. The sizes 41 - 55 inches relate to rear projection TV's where the size is considered to be the 'true' diagonal (CRT's have slightly smaller visible areas).
