Materials-
1. One copy of The Sun and its Family by Bertha Morris Parker per student.
2. KWL Transparency
3. KWL Handouts
4. Transparency of Solar System Cartoon
Motivation-
Students will look at a cartoon depicting all nine planets in a unique way and discuss what they can tell about the planets from the cartoon.
Know-
Students will learn characteristics of each of the nine planets of the solar system.
Students will know how to work effectively in groups in order to accomplish a task.
Do-
Students will complete a KWL chart in regards to the solar system.
In groups, students will create visual representations of one or all of the planets discussed during class.
Students will individually write summaries of what they learned from the in class readings.
Procedure-
1. Students will fill out the Know section of the KWL chart independently and then share their ideas with the class to be recorded on the KWL transparency.
2. After a brief class discussion, students will fill out the Want to know section of the chart and then share their ideas with the class to be recorded on the KWL transparency.
3. Students will take turns reading marked sections from The Sun and its Family.
4. Students will fill out the learned section of the KWL chart and then share their ideas with the class to be recorded on the KWL transparency.
5. Students will be placed into groups using index cards with pictures of each planet.
6. In groups of three, students will work to put what they learned into a visual representation.
Summary-
One student from each group will share their visual representation and discuss what they learned from the reading.
Students will explain how using a KWL chart helped them organize their thoughts and gain understanding from the reading.
Extension-
For homework, students will write individual paragraphs summarizing what they learned in class.
