4th Grade This experiment encompasses identifying and
controlling variables that cause bread to mold. Objectives-
Swbat identify
and control variables that cause bread to mold. -Ask
questions that can be answered through a scientific investigation -Use
observations and select appropriate scientific information to form predictions
and hypotheses. -Recognize/develop
well-designed procedures that identify important variables within an
investigation -Analyze
data to identify trends and form conclusions -Explain
that some source of energy is needed for all organisms to stay active and grow National
Science education Standards- -Plan
and conduct a simple investigation -Use
date to construct a reasonable explanation -Understand
that organisms have basic needs Anticipatory
set- While bringing out a moldy bread, we
will ask the students if they would like a sandwich and wait for
reactions. When students say no, we will
ask why? What is wrong with the bread? What is growing on it, how did it get
there? Procedure- 1.
We will tell students
that they are going to figure out what causes bread to mold. 2.
Students will be
placed in groups and given time to make their predictions, design their
experiment and identify the variables that they need to control. 3.
Once students have an
outline for their experimental plan, they will be given their materials. 4.
Each group will be
given four slices of bread; some water, some paper towels, and some plastic
wrap and told that they can leave the pieces on the counter top or in the dark
cabinet. 5.
Students will be
given time to complete the experiment and asked to share their prediction of
which piece of bread will accumulate mold first. 6.
After listening to
each group’s prediction, we will discuss any other variables that could
influence the rate of mold growth.
Possible variables could include the wet or dryness of the bread, light
and darkness, and /or being wrapped in plastic wrap. Hopefully students will think of other
variables as well. Closure- We will take a gallery walk of
everyone’s moldy bread Materials- Loaf of bread Cups of water Plastic wrap/zip lock
