submersible
Operated by the Woods Hole
Oceanographic Institution,
Alvin is among the most famous submersibles
and played an important role in the exploration of the
sunken liner Titanic. Alvin also took part in the search for ,
and recovery of, a nuclear weapon lost off the
coast of Spain in 1966 Alvin itself sank in 1968 in more than
5000 feet of water while preparing for a dive near Cape Cod,
Massachusetts. Lifting lines on the crafts tender broke
and Alvin sank with its hatch open. Alvin was recovered in 1969
with the help of Renolds Aluminum's submersible Aluminaut,
