Titanic Artifacts Seen on Global
TV. In a two-hour broadcast originating in Paris
early Oct. 29, old
banknotes and jewelry were pulled from an assistant
purser's safe and a
leather satchel that had been recovered from the
wreck of the Tita nic
during a controversial expedition mounted by the
French Institut e for
Research and Exploration of the Sea. The broadcast,
Return to the
Titanic...Live, was beamed to 20 countries. It was
hosted by U.S .
actor Telly Savalas.
The remains of the Titanic had been discovered in
1985 by the French
institute in partnership with the Woods Hole (Mass.)
Oceanographic
Institute. A team from the Massachusetts institute
had explored the
ship's wreckage in July 1986 but without removing any
artifacts.
The French team that recovered the artifacts had
explored the wreckage
in a series of 32 dives made between July 25 and
Sept. 9. The
expedition had been widely criticized as desecrating
the memory of the
more than 1,500 people who died in the 1912
shipwreck.
