Enjoyed your site!! I was in Carndonagh the 2nd week of June. I was talking to a gentleman in the Town Square. He asked me what my name was. When I told him that my grandfather was a William McLucas, born in Glasalt to George and Margaret (Cheney)McLu as in 1882, he looked me up and down, and rather disparagingly, said, "You're Planter stock!" I said to him, "But my grandfather married a Catholic girl, Mary Deehan, from Balleeghan, Greencastle, converted to Catholicism, and raised his seven children as Catholics!" He replied, "You're still Planter stock." I spent the bulk of my time in Inishowen looking for information on the Deehan side of my family, and Father McGoldrick of Moville Parish was most kind and helpful. I found distant cousins who showed me the farm (9 1/2 acres, and grazing rights!!) and house (2 rooms, one 14 x 12, the other 7 x 12) that my grandmother grew up on. It was raining, but they assured that on a clear day I would be able to see Derry to the right, the hills of Antrim across the Lough ( we saw those), and Mull of Kintyre up to the left, from the door step. The house is a sheep barn now, but it was a special experience to stand in that doorway. It was also a special experience to attend Mass at St. Mary's in Ballybrack, which my grandmother attended. Looking at that farm, I had no difficulty seeing why all 5 of the daughters went to Boston, MA. I hope to get back to Inishowen in a couple of years, and find the farms the McLucas family had. According to a letter I had from my grandfather's brother Alexander in 1973, they had a farm in Carndoagh, and my greatgrandfather George bought another one n Glasalt, where my grandfather was born. There were 10 children, but again, the majority of them went to America. Thanks again for a wonderful reminder of my trip to Ireland.

Hi there. I've just come back from Ireland where I stayed in Culdaff with my aunt Ellen Mcdermott. She runs the Pines Hostel on Bunagee Road. We also visited Carn as well as my cousin Valerie McDermott lives there. Its lovely there as I've not been there n ten years. We mainly drank in the Persian bar, but also went to Simpsons and McGrorys in Culdaff (especially the Country Jam nights) Any info you have on any of these places would be great. The sight is good btw! Can't wait to return..hopefully soon!
