Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines

The Review:

Although this is probably what some would class as a dated game, it's popularity still makes it worthy of a review in my eyes. I have owned the game since it was released, and after the first few months of ownership, having only reached level eleven, I gave up. I became somewhat stuck on level eleven, even though I had read a mission guide. the game itself scores top marks with me, in all area's; game play, graphics and setup. the variety of characters available in the game is good, each character having their own capabilities and tools/weapons. These factors stop the game play from becoming monotomus, as does the realistic mission targets, well linked with the second world war. The graphics in the main game are very good, especially on a good computer. The option to zoom in and out as you wish is well managed, in that the level of detail in the graphics stays constant until you zoom in extremely close, not usually needed any way. The one thing that I think that this game lacks is an option to have a first person view, possibly because of the quality of the technology available at the time the game was being designed, as the more recent release of Hidden and Dangerous does have this option. There are many cheats around, but once these are used for a while the game becomes somewhat aimless and boring, however if you do need to cheat to help you complete a level. then the option is always there, which is nice to know. These cheats can be found in the P.C. Gaming section of this site. All in all, I would recommend this game to anyone who enjoys strategy games, especially those with a strong plot. I would give this game 8 out of 10, dropping marks because of its age, not it's fault really. also there are now follow up games such as Commandos: Beyond The Call Of Duty and the recent release of Commandos 2.
