ULSTER COUNTY -- We're playing your song!

Mountain Greenery. Winter Wonderland. In the Good Old Summertime. Autumn Leaves: Ulster County is playing your song.

Four seasons of the year, from the mountaintop to the riverfront, things are humming.

Native Americans called it the lovely land and land in the sky. No wonder. Ulster County is framed in living color, the ever-changing blue hues of the Hudson River which forms our eastern border and the Catskill Mountains, our western. With forty miles of shoreline, the riverfront sings with activity: boating, swimming, lighthouse tours and scenic cruises. Kingston's waterfront, a national historic district, offers a medley of maritime heritage along with wonderful shops and restaurants. The third oldest city in New York State and its first capital, Kingston retains its Dutch roots in a remarkable collection of old stone houses, including the 1676 Senate House, in its uptown Stockade Area. Similar houses grace the landscape throughout the county and constitute the largest collection still standing in the USA> A stroll down Main Street in Hurley or "the oldest street in America" in new Paltz is a real walk down memory lane.

Nearly one half of Ulster County lies within the Catskill Forest Preserve, which offers the experience of hiking and skiing in a pristine environment. Flowing through the Preserve, the Esopus Creek offers anglers one of the premier trout streams in the northeastern US and tubers a summer day to remember. A standout feature of our landscape is the gleaming white Shawangunk Ridge with its stunning teal-colored glacial "sky-lakes". The Gunks attract an international audience of mountain climbers to its cliffs, while over 1,000 miles of trails within the Minnewaska State Park Preserve are a magnet for mountain bikers and hikers. The Shawangunk Wine Trail leads to tours and tastings at five wineries. Ulster County is the home of the Woodstock Anniversary Concert which was hosted here in 1994. The Woodstock legacy permeated Ulster County's cultural landscape, which is rich with art and craft galleries, theatre and concerts.
