What Happened
Columbine High School
April 20, 1999
On April 20, 1999, at approximately 11:21 AM Mountain Time, two gunmen began shooting fellow classmates at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado. The two were later identified as 18 year old Eric David Harris and 17 year old Dylan Bennett Klebold.
They began their rampage in the parking lot, and then they entered the school through a door near the cafeteria. After throwing pipe bombs and shooting students, one ran up the stairs into the library, while the other gunman remained in the cafeteria for a while. Most people were killed in the library. The quest for revenge ended when Klebold and Harris took their own lives.
Harris and Klebold killed 15 people, including themselves, and seriously injured 25 more. Apparently, they had been planning the attack on the school for over a year, and they wanted it too take place on Hitler's birthday. They aimed to kill the "jocks" as revenge for their treatment of them. Everyone cosidered Harris and Klebold to be outcasts, including the other outcasts themselves.
No one knows exactly what was going through the minds of the two killers, but witnesses say that they seemed to be "enjoying themselves. They were laughing and hooting as they shot people. They seemed to be having the time of their lives." We may never know the whole story, since Klebold and Harris died of self inflicted gun shot wounds in the library that day.
The students of Columbine High went back to school today (May 03, 1999), but not at Columbine. Their school has turned into a major crime scene. Instead, they attended classes in the afternoon at a neighboring Chatfield High. Most students say their glad to be back, and they just want to get back to their normal lives. But, as they all know, things will never be the same again.
The students say they want good to come out of all this. "Maybe people will be more aware of what's going on." said one student. "It may help to warn others, and prevent massacres like this from happening in the future." Schools do seem to be reacting positively to Littleton, and security is getting even stronger. The nation as a whole is taking action, and Columbine is standing right behind them.
