The Prophecy
The Prophecy was one of the first movies I saw of Christopher
Walken, and what a movie it was/is. The role was well matched, the storyline
is great and the combination of a thriller with subtile and well chosen
jokes is just fantastic. Not a word is misplaced or too much. For a Walken
fan there's a lot to enjoy in this movie, but so is for everyone. A great
cast too.
The story (very short)
God gave men a soul, much to the dislike of the
archangles in Heaven. A war in Heaven is the result and when an evil man
on earth dies there are several angels interested in the soul because of
the fact it can be used or prevented to win the fight.
Gabriel (played by Christopher) is out to win that
fight and the strongest so it seems to be able to get that soul, until
Lucifer arrives (a great role by Viggo Mortensen).
An evil soul like that only belongs to Lucifer,
so he thinks, and when he comes the plot thickens.
The Prophecy got a sequel, Prophecy II, which in my opinion
is faster and therefore not as good as the first one. It's fun though,
because it's more of what we have seen, and more of that isn't boring.
But they should have made it some 15 minutes longer to give us the space
to enjoy the jokes more thoroughly and give the movie more room to understand
what is going on. For those who see only Prophecy II, won't probably like
the movie. There are some lovely scenes in Prophecy II as well ... the
scene in the coffeeshop, the scene where he gets examined in the mortuarium
and above all the opening scene (we all chatted about that often enough
:o) ).
The Prophecy (I) holds even more lovely scenes: the
scene at the stairs with the trumpet and the kids, the scene in the trailer
where he comes for the kid, the bit where he goes after Uriel to burn him,
on the graveyard, in the coffeeshop with that poor girl. Enough scenes
which should be (or maybe will become) classics already.
Now there's one movie that's still easily available,
so get it and watch for yourself!
The Prophecy was released in 1995, The Prophecy II in
1997.
