Photographs of the genus Cardamine

Purple spring cress (Cardamine douglassii) is an early woodland wildflower in the mustard family.  The flower consists of four pink or purple-tinged petals.  In the center of this photograph is the five-petaled spring beauty (Claytonia virginica).  Bulbous cress (Cardamine bulbosa) is the most similar species to purple spring cress, however the flowers of bulbous cress are white, the stem is less hairy, and bulbous cress is found in wetter habitats.
