Bunky Takes a Ride
by Alia D and Melissa P
1999
One Day in Chemistry, Mrs.
Shmoon said we were supposed to make a container that would keep an egg
from breaking, to be dropped from a high place. Two girls that we'll
call Alissa and Malia decided to work together. If only Mrs. Shmoon
knew what those two girls went through for this project!! They met
at Malia's house. Alissa brought supplies - nerf ball, cotton, and
bubble wrap. malia got a tin for their container, some more stuffing,
glue, and tape. Soon, they had come up with a surefire contraption.
They needed to test it.
They took it to the window
of Malia's house. It was on the second story - a very HIGH second
story! And, the fall would take the egg right to the cement.
They dropped it, and leaped down the stairs to inspect their precious egg
which they named Bunky. Cracks? Breaks? NO! IT WORKED!
They knew there had to be
another place to test it, so they set off through Malia's neighborhood.
They were going to go to the high school to drop it off the bleachers,
but then Malia remembered she had cleverly tricked the Slambridge band
director, Mr. Zaloe, into letting her not go to Pep Band. She didn't
feel like playing cheers for a bunch of sweaty soccer players - not when
she could be preparing for MOLE DAY! So, they needed another place.
No sooner were they out the front gate that they spotted a mountain across
the street from Malia's house. Sure, we call it a mountain, and you
probably think we're kidding. But seriously - there is a mountain
across the street from Malia's house. Sure, we call it a mountain,
and you probably think we're kidding. But seriously - there is a
mountain across the street from Alia! I mean.... Malia!!! So,
they set off. They tore through a bunch of dried up bamboo, and discovered
that someone had put up a fence since Malia was little, and used to climb
the same mountain! So Alissa climbed over this fence since, and Malia
tore her way through some plants around it. They set off for the
steep part. Almost slipping and killing themselves, they continued
on. Finally, they made it to the cliff of the mountain. They
sat for a minute, picking thorns off themselves and taking the leaves out
of their hair. Then, it was time for the test.
With one daring pitch, the
egg and its container were hurled off the mountain. Alissa and Malia
figured it reached the bottom, because they heard a few crashes.
They found the easy way down the mountain, and walked around it to the
steep cliff side.
Where was the egg? It
was nowhere to be seen!! So the searched and searched.. when all
of a sudden, they spotted it halfway up the steep cliff!! Malia tried
to find a way up to get it. She picked the wrong way. It was
too steep to climb, and when she finally climbed down from the level she
made it to, she was covered in sharp little jagers!! Luckily, Alissa
was there to take charge. She found a way that was not as steep -
but much harder to get through!!! She pushed her way through the
thick jaggery things. She saw a mysterious box. Daringly,
she peeked inside and saw... and saw... AND SAW... A BUNCH OF DEAD FLOWERS!!!!
She figured they were innocent enough, and were not trying to take her
egg. So she continued on. After four painstaking minutes, she
made it to the egg. "I've got you, Bunky!" she cried as she held
up the container in triumph. Just then, Malia screamed at the top
of her lungs, "I LOVE MOLE DAY!". Alissa threw the egg the rest of
the way down. Malia thought to herself "Gee whiz, I think it broke
this time!". Now Alissa had to get down. It was a very very
steep cliff... how would she do it? With some expert coaching from
Malia and her own skilled feet, she managed to slide her way down, almost
dying three times! Heh. So then they got down to the safe ground,
and the moment of truth was here. Did the egg break?
They removed the rubber bands.
They got glue all over their hands. They lifted the cotton, then
some tape, and pulled out the egg. Not a single crack was upon Bunky
the egg. It was a hard day for Bunky so they decided to take him
home. After hurling the box against the side of the cliff about fifteen
or twenty times, they kicked the whole way home. By this time, the
tin had many dents on it, and was covered with dirt. So were Malia
and Alissa! They were so covered with plant life, that they decided
to take a picture with Bunky the egg.
If only Mrs. Schmoon knew
what those girls went through for Mole Day. And, if only Mr. Zaloe
knew what Malia was REALLY doing all night! Hehehehehe.

PS. In case you're wondering, a mole is
a unit in science. 6.02 x 10 to the 23rd. All the science teachers
in my school celebrate it October 23 like its a big deal. We even
had mole day olympics.
