Sean Connery was born
August 25, 1930, in Edinburgh, Scotland. He was born under the name
of Tomas Sean Connery to Joseph and Euphamia Connery. His father
worked as a truck driver and his mother was a housewife. Besides
his parents, he lived and grew up with his brother Neil, who is eight years
younger than himself and also an actor. He, like many other actors
and actresses, grew up very poor. When he was little, he had to sleep
in a bureau drawer because his parents could not afford a crib. The
fact that they were poor never really bothered Sean, because that is how
everyone lived in his neighborhood. Sean attended Tollcross Elementary
School and had very advanced mathematical skills. Even as a young
lad, he had a fascination with film. He used to skip school and go
to a local movie theater to watch “the pictures”.
At age thirteen, he
quit school to work full time at the dairy to help support his family.
Three years later he joined the Royal Navy and, like all other good sailors,
got two tattoos on his arm. One of them says “MUM AND DAD”, and the
other says “SCOTLAND FOREVER”. He had signed up for a seven-year
service but was released after three years due to stomach ulcers.
Sean later joined
a weightlifting club to impress the ladies and his fellow gym mates nominated
him for the Mr. Universe contest. He was chosen third in the tall men's
division and was given a medal. While he was in London for the contest,
a local casting director noticed him and asked him to join the chorus of
a new musical, South Pacific, playing on Drury Lane in London's theater
district. At the first rehearsal, he decided acting was what he wanted
to do for the rest of his life. He decided to go by the name Sean because
it was his middle name and reminded him of an admired actor, (Shane) and
he did not think the name Tom or Tommy fit his image. He was called
Sean long before he was an actor because when he was twelve, he had an
Irish buddy named Seamus (pronounced Sha-mus), and all of their friends
nicknamed them “Seamus and Shawn”.
While filming one
of his movies, he met an actress on the set named Diane Cilento.
At the time, Diane was married to someone else, but she and Sean fell in
love. She divorced her first husband, and she and Sean got married
in 1962. They had a son in 1963 named Jason Joseph Connery, who is
now also an actor and gave Sean his first grandson in 1997 named Dashiell
Quinn Connery. In 1973, Sean had an interview with the press, during
which he had commented that he saw nothing wrong with hitting a woman as
long as it was justified and as long as she had plenty of warning.
Rumors began to spread that he was abusive to his wife, so he and Diane
got a divorce. Sean married again in 1975 to a woman named Micheline
Roquebrune. They met during a golf tournament where Sean won the
men’s award and Micheline won the woman’s award.

An interesting fact
about Sean Connery is that during all the James Bond movies, he wore a
toupee. He started losing his hair at the early age of twenty-one.
Another interesting thing about him is that he donated all of his salary
from Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves to charity in 1991. Also, it was
said in an interview that during the filming of Never Say Never, he was
taking martial arts lessons. In the process of the lessons, he angered
his instructor whom in turn, broke his wrist. Sean stayed with the
broken wrist for a number of years thinking it was only a minor pain.
Who the instructor was surprised me; it was Steven Seagal.
I think Sean is a
great actor, and I admire him for his age. There aren't too many actors
or actresses out there who are still producing action movies at the age
of 70. Most people retire five to ten years earlier with much
less stressful jobs.
