Most of us who grew up in the 80s remember Punky Brewster. I had a huge crush on her when I was a kid and these days she's stayed beautiful the entire way! Punky Brewster came out around 1984 on NBC and was one of the most popular children's television shows. Though the adult audience was small Punky Brewster was a character many kids could relate to and the show created a loyal fan base of kids (like me!), a hard won battle considering adults of the time were glued to the tv show "60 Minutes" which was on at the same time.
Some of the cast included:
George Gaynes as Henry Warnimont
Soliel Moon Frye as Punky Brewster
Cherie Johnson as Cherie Johnson
Ami Foster as Margaux Kramer
A cartoon followed. "It's Punky Brewster" had some success though it had only a little to do with the live action television series. In the cartoon Punky Brewster had her usual crew of friends Cherie and Margaux, Brandon and the boys and of course Henry, but a new cast member was added. This time a furry magical creature named "Glomer". Punky was riding her bike one day and found a rainbow, following it quickly to it's end she came upon a magical village of leprechauns and creatures like Glomer. Hurrying back to tell her friends, Glomer followed her and the cartoon was made. It was a series of misadventures with some magic thrown in. All in all it was a good cartoon and it originally ran from September 14, 1985 to September 5, 1987 on NBC's Saturday morning lineup and was later on in syndication under the name "Punky Brewster".
The Lyrics to the theme song!
I ran to the end of a rainbow's eye
There wasn't any pot of gold.
And there I found a new friend who's two feet tall
One hundred and four years old
Glomer is an orphan
