~MOOSEHEAD LAKE~

Moosehead Lake is located in Northern Maine. It's 40 miles long, 20 miles wide, and is 74,890 acres, or 117 square miles, in size. In fact, it's the largest lake in the Northeastern U.S. Ben and I arrived at The Birches on a rainy Sunday afternoon. We decided to stay in the lodge instead of one of the cabins.

We pause a moment, then continue to explore our surroundings.

Although it was the last week in September, the woodpile was of considerable size. All 10 cabins had a woodpile the size of this one.

Shortly after we arrived at the lodge, we signed up for a Moose Safari. So around 5 that evening, a guide in a pontoon boat took Ben and I, plus 3 other couples, 7 miles up the lake, and into the wildlands. And yes, we saw moose! In my mind, I had pictured a moose as being the size of a cow, or a horse. You can imagine how shocked I was when I saw an animal the size of a building. He was a Bull Moose, the guide informed us, and he was BIG!!

With animals the size of elephants walking around, is it any wonder that we saw signs like these along the highway?

The state of Maine has some of the most picturesque scenery I've seen. The coast line, with it's rocks and pounding surf, is awesome. We were in Northern Maine the week in September, when the mountains were a mass of yellows, oranges, reds, greens, and whites. If you haven't seen Maine's foliage in the fall, then you're missing something. Move to the next page and look at my photographs.
