Onderwerp: the big nOte, march 11, 2000
links: captain beefheart, the residents, frank zappa & lots of others
let's kick off with some 'short' bits:
* * * * juicy groove's "first taste" has recently been reissued. the album
was first released on payola records as a picture disc way back in 1978.
the reissue is a black vinyl album. this 'freak rock supergroup' features
elliott ingber on guitar.
* * * * * zoogz rift has had a lot of trouble the
last year, and quite frankly, he isn't doing too well. he's had some major
physical problems and more recently he was diagnosed as going blind. the
good thing is that he's still feeling okay and that he's concentrating on
making music again. in the meantime he created his own cdr-label,SCI, to
make all his material available again. yes, you read it right: every zoogz
title is available on cdr:
- with no apparent reason
- idiots on the miniature golf course
- music sucks
- can you smell my genitals from where you're standing?
- amputees in limbo
- ipecac
- interim resurgence
- island of living puke
- son of puke
- the transients bootleg
- water
- water II: at safe distance
- united we fall
- torment
- die, you cretinous bastards!
- fuck god, fuck your mother, fuck all your bullshit, and fuck you
- war zone
- duets
- villagers
- europe 1990
- electroaquaticities 1972-1976
- five billion pinheads can't be wrong
- sanitized for your protection
- school of the criminally insane
- benefit
- sunken treasures: the very best of zoogz rift
all cds are sold for the reasonalbe price of $15.95 (except for SUNKEN
TREASURES) plus shipping of course. they are distributed exclusively by
john trubee :
john trubee ; Space & Time ;
PO Box 4921 ;
Santa Rosa, CA 95402; USA
also available:
- here's to you zoogz (by henry kaiser)
- gunther packs a stiffy (by the rudy schwartz project)
- bowling for appliances (by the rudy schwartz project)
and zoogz might bring the Shitheads back to yurrip, as some sort of promo
tour for his « sunken treasures » album.
* * * * * 'Jazz Notes' a BBC Radio
3 radio program scheduled « Alyn Shipton introduces John Etheridge's
Zappatistas band, featuring the music of Frank Zappa » at Thu, 17 Feb,
2330-0000 (GMT) ; I don't know if it really happened - but I'm pretty sure
I'll find out soon.
* * * * * another piece of info that reached me through
Zjakki Willems : the American Mavericks festival will take place in San
Francisco june 7 - 24, 2000. Lots of names : Charles Ives, Henry Cowell,
Milton Babbitt, John Cage, Morton Feldman, Terry Riley, Lou Harrison, Steve
Reich and Frank Zappa, to name a few.
quote : « Also appearing in this American Mavericks festival is the New
World Symphony, the Miami-based youth orchestra formed by Tilson Thomas more
than a decade ago as a post-graduate training program for conservatory
students. Featured on the New World's June 20 program is the West Coast
premiere of Steven Mackey's electric guitar concerto Tuck and Roll (which
the New World premieres in Miami this April).
The New World Symphony returns the next night led by Bay Area composer John
Adams in his own works Shaker Loops and Grand Pianola Music, along with
pieces by Colin Nancarrow and rock iconoclast cum classical composer Frank
Zappa. (Ken Smith) »
* * * * * Ratt guitarist Warren DeMartini's solo cd
(1996, cd, japan) was produced by DeMartini and Dweezil Zappa.
* * * * *
Dweezil Zappa can also be found on a Van Halen tribute cd - forgot to write
down the title... * * * * *
* flat earth society : live at the beursschouwburg 1999
(2000, cd, bel, via records viakra stage 3 692006 5)
another Peter Vermeersch project (cfr. A Group) , and an excellent
one if I may say so. half an hour of big band swing. a superb mini.
just to let you in on the taste of people living in my neigbourhood : a
little while ago a performance / concert in my home-town turnhout had to be
cancelled. the event (music by Peter Vermeersch) was scheduled in cultural
centre De Warande ( a reference in the 'cultural world') but had to be
cancelled because only 6 (six ! !) people had ordered a ticket ! Explains
why I don't talk to my neighbours anymore.
* double up : bobby brown
(1999, cd5'', eur, marlboro music / bmg 74321 674702)
in short : it has zappa's bobby brown on it : radio edit & original
version. and it's so bad...
* moris tepper : big enough to disappear
(1994, cd, usa, candlebone records cr0013-cd)
yes, this is the very same moris tepper that played with beefheart
(and worked with tom waits). I had heard rumours about this album, but only
came across it recently. singer-songwriter-stuff ; I like it.
* dixie dregs: california screamin'
(2000, cd, usa, zebra records zd 44021-2)
recorded live at the roxy in 1999. featuring special guest dweezil
zappa on 'peaches en regalia' (fz). it's an okay album. I like the fine
fusion guitar work by steve morse a lot, but someone should have cut out the
couple of southern country rock songs. the zappa coverversion is really
great and 'jessica' is something I like to whistle along.
* vitalski's living tornado's: geweldige lingerie
(1999, cd5", bel, de ysfabriek bul 99.002)
this is antwerp madness by vitalski (vital baeken) and his friends.
slapstick on a limited edition cd. it's in dutch, but hilarious.
* zita swoon: our daily reminders
(1999, cd5", eec, wea 8573 80561 2)
The next single from the latest Zita Swoon album "I paint
pictures...". Just great.
* die freunde des vereins zur pflege der kunst von francis vincent z u.a.
m.: vorführungs cd
(1999(?), cd5", ger)
Wow! Recorded in three days, somewhere in 1997, this mini cd brings
some excellent interpretations of Zappa material. & I like the german
titles as well: 'die schwartze seite - schlagwerk solo', 'finster fussware
II - balletmusik', 'beschwingtes zwischenspiel', 'auszug aus der musik für
elektrische geige und verbilligtes symphonieorchester' and another 'die
schwartze seite'
= 'black page drum solo', 'sinister footwear', 'excerpt from music for
electric violin and low-budget symphony orchestra' and another 'the black
page'
* the muffin men: god shave the queen
(1999, cd, uk, efa 03447-2)
this latest cd by the muffin men is a 'mixed mode' cd. it includes
music plus an archive of sound, video pictures and text for mac or pc. the
music part is excellent: the muffin men (including three members of the
wizards of twiddly) are sounding better than ever: great coverversions,
including beefheart's dropout boogie as well, fine humour and a superb jimmy
carl black to give it that little extra. I bought the cd at the concert
they gave in delft, the netherlands, somewhere in december 1999 - great show
as well. haven't even looked at the data-part yet...
* wizards of twiddly: independent legs
(1992, cd, uk, fracture for pleasure recordings cd ffp 001)
this first album by the wizards (read the muffin men part above) is
getting harder to find these days. it's a very jazzy, contemporary rock
album; almost 10 years old, but still sounding very fresh. worth looking
out for.
* radio show 2000/01/10: 'cucamonga', vrt 1, belgian radio: interview
+ music muffin men (int. with roddie and jimmy carl black)
* the muffin men: ragged prayers
(1999, cdr, uk)
this is a cdr-recording of original demos from 1990-1992. I bought it
at the same concert where I bought the "god shave" cd. I have to admit that
I find it a bit ridiculous to pay as much for a home-burned cdr than for a
'normal' cd. in my opinion something around US $ 10 or 12 seems more
reasonable. I mean, there's no label, no distributor and it's only a cdr. on
the other hand: I do like the idea of bands making material available on
cdr: a lot of good music will never find it's way to the audience (well,
read "me") because it was rejected by a label. that way, an artist's output
can exactly be what he or she wants it to be. a bit like zoogz rift is
doing with his material. anyway, I enjoyed listening to a bit of muffin men
history.
