So you want to hear the story of how the universe was created? While I'm packing some provisions perhaps you would like to sit a while and listen to my uncle Gylfe (he claims he is a direct descendant of King Gylfe of Svithiod but then he is a crazy old man, believe him if you wish).
According
to the old tales passed down from generation to generation in my family.
All the way back to my great grand sire King Gylfe of Svithiod who actually
entered the house of the Gods and sat amongst them. This is how the world
came into being. As told to him by three rather strange beings; Hog, Tredje
and Jamnhog.
In the beginning there was Ginnungagapet (the abyss). North of this
was Niflheim (land of cold and darkness) found there is the well Hvergelmer
from which icy mists rose. In the south was Muspelheim (land of fire) where
Surte ruled with a flaming sword.
The mists of Hvergelmer formed a stream (Elivågor) which eventually
filled Ginnungagapet with ice. At the same time swords of fire leapt from
Muspelheim striking the ice causing it to melt. The resulting drops of
water and fire mixed to form two giant beings: A cow with the name of "Audhumbla"
and a giant named "Ymer". The giant gained sustenance and grew by feeding
himself through four mouths on the four nipples of Audhumbla who in turn fed
on the white frosts which collected on the rocks about them.
The warm breath of Audhumbla created a man called Bure
who
by some strange means found a wife. These two were the first of the Asa
dynasty of which Odin and Ve would be the greatest. Ymer, laying on his
side, created several different creatures. From his feet came the hideous
three headed monster, the ancestor of the the evil giant family Rimtusarnas.
From his left arm a couple sprang who were the ancestors of such as the
three fates and Mimer.
In time Odin killed Ymer, with the aid of his two brothers, and used
his body as the ground for the new world. His blood becoming the sea where
all the Rimtusarnas save one drowned. His skull became the sky, his bones
the mountains and his brain the clouds. This new world was called Midgard.
Once while taking a walk along the seashore of Midgard with his brothers.
Odin came across two trees, Ask and Embla, which he set free from their
earthly bonds. Giving them each the power of motion, intelligence, will
and spirit. Their forms changed to the likeness of the gods it is from
this pair that all humanity sprang. The fate Urd gives each of these offspring
a being called Fylgia at birth that will............. Z Z Z Z ................
Well it appears as though old Gylfe has nodded off. If you want
to hear more stories you'll have to wait for him to wake. Once asleep you
could strike him with the mighty Mjolner with no effect. Regardless I have
our provisions packed so let us begin our journey. We can always return
later to listen to the old man tell his tales.
