On April 15, 1999, Prince William carried out his first major solo engagement when he became a godfather at a London christening teeming with monarchs-to-be and future heads of royal houses. However, he had the disadvantage of carrying his left arm in a sling and plaster cast after a recent operation on a broken finger. But he was able to remove the sling and cradle five-month-old Prince Konstantine Alexios of Greece in his arms for the traditional Greek Orthodox walk around the font.

Princes William and Harry, along with their father Prince Charles, arrived March 23, 1998 in Vancouver, Canada, for a week long visit to British Columbia. Their holiday included public functions -- an anti-racism conference, as well as a visit to a school for the deaf -- were met by hundreds of screaming girls, as well as four days of skiing at the renowned Whistler resort. During their visit, the princes were also presented with the official sports jackets and caps of the Canadian Olympic team. Click for a photo.

On Monday December 15, 1997 Prince William joined his father and brother at the Spice World - The Movie premiere at the Empire, Leicester Square (London). It was the third time this year that Charles has met the group. On the first occasion, at a concert in Manchester in May of 1997, the Spice Girls allegedly covered Prince Charles in kisses and were said to have pinched his bottom. Believe what you want. In the month of November Prince Harry and his father met the girls in South Africa at one of their performances where they "cuddled Harry and held his hand".

HM Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on Nov. 20 last year, where Princes William and Harry made their first public appearances since their mother Diana's funeral on September 6, 1997. Prince Willi am looked solemn, and with a bowed head, entered Westminster Abbey to honour his grandparents' 50 years of marriage. 11 weeks earlier his mother had been eulogized in that same building. After the service (and out of the church), the boys laughed and chatted with cousins Zara and Peter Phillips, and Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice. Their nanny, Tiggy Legge-Bourke, also attended the event.

"For us, a Royal Family, the message is often harder to read, obscured as it can be by deference, rhetoric or the conflicting currents of public opinion. But read it we must."
