50 Counties with Lowest Levels of Poverty

Listed below are the 50 counties with the lowest levels of poverty. In parentheses is the county seat of government. Nationwide there are 621 counties in which less than 10% of the population lives in poverty. This means less than 1 out of 10 are poor in these counties. (Source: U.S. Census Bureau, 1997).

While a majority of the low poverty levels can be found in suburbs of 36 out of the 100 largest metropolitan areas, prosperity also flourishes in less populated metropolitan areas such as Cedar Rapids, Green Bay, Reno, and Roanoke. Prosperity can also be found in counties with much smaller populations such as the ski resorts of Colorado, counties along the border states of Indiana-Kentucky-Ohio and Iowa-South Dakota, and counties in the Northwestern part of Washington.
