What you are about to read is TRUE !!!
Thank you for
coming to my hacker awareness page. It is amazing how many people have
no idea how hackers can gain entry into your system. While most times it
is just for a peek at what you have on your system, there is the odd time
when damage can be done just for the fun of it.
I would like
to tell you about a little program that hackers use to gain entry into
your system. It is called "The Back Orifice Trojan". What this little program
does is allow the hacker to gain entry into your system every time you
are on line through and open port. The really bad thing about this is the
ways you can get infected by it. It can be e-mailed hidden inside and attachment,
hidden inside a picture on a webpage,( which means if the picture comes
up you got it), plus it can be hidden in any scripting. This is not an
old hackers tool by any stretch of the imagination.
This tool
was developed last year by the hacker group "Cult of the Dead Cow", as
a protest against what they see as a lack of security in Windows 9x.
Among many of the features in Back Orifice is a scanning tool that looks for active IP addresses within a given range of IP numbers. By this feature a lone the hacker can pick and choose whom he/she would like to attack. Attacks like stated can vary from nothing more than a simple peek a boo to major and destructive activities. Imagine your worse nightmare about your computer and this can actually happen without you being aware until it is too late. Thinks like deleting system files, changing or deleting drives, removing important information and deleting it, to inserting a format command the next time you reboot.
Thankfully due to some very smart people who do not agree with the hacker code, have come up with tool of their own to defeat them. There is a fairly new downloadable program called "Anti-BO". This program not only watches your computer port but also watches to make sure you don't pick up the virus. By watching the port it will see and RECORD the hackers IP address and also stop him dead in his tracks. By recording the IP you are now able to provide this to your ISP and they can track him down. In 99% of the cases your ISP and the ISP of the hacker will work together to not only trace the hacker but also bring formal charges against him. Depending on the Country of origin of the hacker this can be anywhere from a misdemeanor to a felony. In the U.S.A I can tell you it will be a felony.
At this time
I would like to give you a TRUE story of a hacker caught by a person who
had this program installed and running at the time of the attack. The Story
comes right out of " New Zealand PC WORLD" magazine.
The notorious
hacking tool Back Orifice has a weakness: you can't always see whom you
launch it against. A 19 year old Danish student knows all too well about
that, after he attacked a random computer user over the internet. The attack
failed, and a few hours later, the student was paid a visit at his home
by his intended victim, Detective Arne Gammelgaard of the Copenhagen Computer
Crime Unit.
Gammelgaard
was surfing the internet from his home address. Some days earlier he had
installed NOBO, a small piece of software that will detect and log any
attempt to install Back Orifice from the internet.
" By sheer coincidence
he hit one of ours. Most unfortunate!" Gammelgaard said in an interview
with PC World Denmark.
Using the
log and the co-operation of the hacker's ISP, Gammelgaard traced the attack
to the chemistry student, who immediately confessed. He will have to face
charges of hacking, which carry a prison term up to six months.
With the information you have just read it is totally up to you in how you can protect or not protect your important files and the security of your computer and personal information held on it. Though Anti-BO can't stop everything that a hacker can throw at you, it surely can stop one of the most important and easy to use tools of his trade. The choice is up to you.
