Burnt Island Light



Built in 1821,the 30ft.stone lighthouse
was razed in 1857
and replaced with
a 1 1/2 story cottage.
A Fresnel lens was installed in the 1850's.
The house and a walkway between house
and tower were added in 1857.
An oil house and boathouse
added in 1880 and 1899.
In 1895 a bell tower and
1,000-pound bell were added.
Burnt Island was the last
lighthouse in New England
to be converted from kerosene
to electricity in 1962.
It was the last in
Maine to be automated in 1989.
