Bass Harbor Head Light

Bass Harbor Head Light
Built in 1858 to warn the mariners of the Bass Harbor Bar
and to mark the entrance to Blue Hill Bay.
It also was shelter for vessels against the easterly gales.
The Lighthouse is attached to a one and a half story wood
frame keepers house by a covered walkway.
A bell tower was added in 1876 but was removed and
a 1902 oil house remains.
The fifth-order Fresnel lens was replaced
with a fourth-order Fresnel in 1902.
The keeper's house is the residence for the Southwest
Harbors Coast Guard Commander and is
not open to the public.
The lighthouse is best seen from the water,
There are paths leading down to boulders and a walkway
takes you to the front of the lighthouse and house.
