Dice Head Light

Dice Head Light
Located at the entrance
to the Penobscot River,
was settled as a trading
post by the Pilgrims of Plymouth.
Baron de St.Castine took over the town
in 1676 and renamed it Castine.
Because of its location,the British,French
and Dutch occupied the town.
An entire American fleet was lost
during the 1779 American Revolution
as they tried to recapture
Castine from the British.
Dice Head Light was built in
1828 to guide mariners into
Castine harbor and into
Penobscot River towards Bangor.
The tower was surrounded by a
six sided wooded frame which was
removed in the late 19 century.
A fourth-order Fresnel lens
was installed in 1858.
The Keepers house and
land became the property
of the town in 1937 and
the lighthouse in 1956.
The house is now rented out
and the income is used
for the maintenance of the grounds.
The light itself was
discontinued and replaced with a
skeleton tower in 1935.
