Moose Peak Light

Moose Peak Light

On the east point of Mistake Island,
President John Quincy Adams
authorized this lighthouse in 1825.
Completed in 1827, it held a
second order Fresnel lens
which was installed in 1856.
In 1887 the present 57 foot
brick tower was built, and in 1901
the keeper's house was replaced and
a walkway was built to
connect the house to the tower.
In 1912 a fog signal was installed
as this was known as one of the
foggiest stations on the Maine Coast,
with fog shrouding the
island 20% of the time.
1972 saw the automation of the light
and the Fresnel lens removed.
The Green Berets blew the keeper's
house up in 1982 as part of
a training exercise.
