It all started on July 26, 1949, when Margaret and Urban Smith gave birth to their first and only son, Phillip Smith. They lived in the city of St. Louis, Mo. He was born the brother of Peggy, Maureen and Diane. Growing up, he liked to play cowboys and indians, as most of us little boys did. Later, in 1959, they moved to Berkeley, Mo. on Evans Lane, a quaint little suburb of St. Louis (at least at the time). As he got older, around 12 years old, he developed an intrest in electronics. One of his projects was an electric lamp that he made. Excited about the ending result and running to the kitchen to show Mom, he proceeded to plug it in, and low and behold, it blew up and caught fire. Of course 911 didn't exist at the time, but a trot to the telly to call the fire department was definitely in order. They rushed to the house and took care of business.

He has always considered himself a frustrated musician. He has a good ear for music, but was never able to master playing an instrument. He plays a little guitar, picks at the keyboard and has played the drums in the past. He started playing the guitar when he was about 13 or 14 years old. He tried lessons, but found them boring and playing the wrong type of music. During his teens, he was in a few basement (garage) bands. In St. Louis, most starting bands played in the basement. They never made much money but had lots of fun just practicing. Phil also liked to ride his motorcycle. When he was about 16, he worked with his dad at a local grocery store called "Tomboy". That didn't last too long and he decided to persue other avenues. Phil graduated from Berkeley High School in the "Class of '69".

Phil decided to apply for "Aaarrrrmmmmmy ttttrrrraaaiiinnninngg, Sir" (for those 'Stripes' fans). He got accepted and joined the Army and had something to do with communications. The Army said, "Look here, private... looks like you want to see the World... You get to go to Korea for a year!" So he served one year in Korea and came back to the States. After 2 years of that mess, he decided that the military wasn't for him. He got out of the Army and moved back to St. Louis where he decided it was time for a change in life.

Along in his travels, he stumbled upon a beautiful young princess by the name of Jane Buback. He seemed to become attached to this young lady, for he married her on August 12, 1972 until the present (that's over 27 years, folks). They lived on Evans Lane with his parents for a while until they could afford a 'pad' of their own. They finally got a place of their own and thought, "We have all this space, I'm sure we could fill it up with something..." That's when they decided kids was the answer. So, kids they had. They started with 1 and thought... not too bad, let's have another... and another... and another! Count'em folks! Yeah... that's right, 4 kids! Can you believe it! (I shouldn't talk...) Jessica (Jessie), Samantha (Sam), Maureen and Peggy. For those non-observant ones, no Lil Jimmy. Four beautiful girls. These girls are talented and are going to be the next generation "Spice Girls".

Near the beginning of the 90's, Phil got tired of the cold winter weather and decided to pack up his brood and move them to the sunny, west central town of Clearwater, Florida. A lovely home with a screened in pool out back. This is where they still reside today. They like it down there and have no desire to live in cold weather again. There are 2 other members of his family that I can't forget.Charlie and Lucy... the family doggies. Charlie is the larger one. to the left is a picture of them playing 'tug-of-war'.

In November 1996, Phil was diagnosed with a cancer called Metastatic Carcinoid Syndrome. This is a rare form of cancer that has spread to his liver. It’s a slow growing cancer, but has no known cure once the symptoms have developed. To control the symptoms, he takes 6 daily injections of a drug named Sandostatin. He tried working a regular schedule, but had to go on disability near the end 1997. He was a Senior Product Marketing Manager for a major manufacturer of data communication equipment called Paradyne Corporation. Phil has been a Telecommunications Professional for over 25 years. Paradyne has been very wonderful with helping him and his family in many ways.

Throughout Phil's whole life, he has been a true baseball fan. A dedicated supporter of the St. Louis Cardinals. His idol is the "Greatest shortstop that ever played the game"... "The Wizard of Ozzie"...You guessed it... Ozzie Smith! On March 12, 1999, Phil's dream finally came true. He recieved a visit by the one and only, Ozzie Smith, at his sister Diane's house. It was a total surprise. He also recieved a signed St. Louis Cardinals home jersey. He has a site on his homepage, the Ozzie Smith Page, with pictures of the event. Wouldn't that be great... getting to meet your lifetime idol! You go, Phil!

Phil is widely known on the internet as "Satman 100" for his supurb midi arrangements. When he first started using computers to create music, it was with a Commodore 64 using Music Construction program. Then, he bought an Amiga, which at that time, was the superior PC with music and graphics. His current setup includes a Pentium II 400 PC, SoundBlaster 64-Gold, Roland E-36 Intelligent Synthesizer, Casio CT6500 Keyboard (c.1985 used for mainly electronic piano and organ sounds), and a Roland 16 channel mixer for taping. He uses Cakewalk Professional for sequencing and modifying MIDI files. The features and flexibility in Cakewalk provides him in arranging the songs. He likes all types of music, but he centers on pop and classic rock. To sample some of his midi arrangements, click here or go to my music page.

All In The Family
Dear Brother,
The Time has come that I must say,
A brothers love will alway stay.
My sisters are great and on a roll,
but my brother is definitely my Hero.
Now God has dealt us a hand that we don't like,
but we must try to understand cause God is always right.
You do have allot to be thankful for,
a wonderful wife and four girls a delight.
You will never be gone in the hearts of us all,
and just maybe God will forget his call.
We will miss you dearly, but I have no fear
because I know our Mom is waiting near.
I pray and cry that this is all a joke,
maybe a nightmare, are maybe a hoax.
I love you, I love you what more can I say,
except to God, I want you to stay.
If I had some power I would blow this away,
then tomorrow would be a much better day.
I thank God each day, he gave me the best,
when it comes to brothers your over the rest.
Your good looking, your smart, your talented too,
your honest, loyal and know what to do.
I better go for now, I am on a roll,
I just want you to know, you are my HERO!
 | Love you forever, Maureen
