Puff Daddy stares Godzilla in the eyes

Puff Daddy recently teamed up with a man he calls his hero; the legendary Jimmy Page, to do a song called "Come with me" for the Godzilla soundtrack. Also on the track is guitar work by the guitar player from Rage Against the Machine. Although I liked the song, it is too typical of Puffy. The man has skillz but needs to use them from time to time. Although I like the Bad Boy style of music, it has become a little "predictable" of late. That is who my attention has turned to other talents. Namely, Jermaine Dupri and Timbaland. They both have unique styles. Timbaland, with his strumming, and rapidly cyclical tunes and beats has a contageous effect upon the listner. Jermaine Dupri, Mr. So So Def on the other hand, has a bass thumping style. His influence on the Hip Hop scene is monumental, although some may not recognize that immedeately. I love his latest work with Mariah Carey, Lord Tariq and Peter Gunz. I also love the great contributions in propelling Usher at the top of the musical scene. Watch for his album later this year.

Get at me Dog

I told you it was going to drop. Grrrrrr..... DMX is here and he arrived with a big bang. This CD is absolutely phenomenal. Don't be fooled, DMX is not your dance floor, radio friendly rapper. He is one of the most talented forces out there today. His music is introspective, sharp at points and overall, a A+ expression of his life, the way he has lived it. I was especially impressed by his choice of samples, including chuch organs in track 13, "Stop Being Greedy." His use of church bells and dog whining also is an ideal reflection of his past, and his love for dogs, especially pitbulls. Grrrrr..Def Jam know what they were doing when they signed this man, he has definetly made a mark for himself.

Down south, bout' it!

Master P has it going on. He just dropped what he calls his last album as a rapper, "The Last Don". I highly doubt this for two reasons, first, he is the drving force behind No Limit Records. Don't get me wrong, Sillk, C Murder and Mia X are all nice, but they don't have the influence that Master P built since his day in the Bay area as "Mr. Ice Cream Man." Also, he has a Playstation game on the way, he just dropped his second album and is sporting some real flashy videos on TV. It's natural that his fans will want more. Consider this as a vacation, hardly a retirement.

I liked the mix of talents P packed into the "I got da Hookup" soundtrack, but I am let down by the videos. On one hand, the "Make um' say uugh!" video was exploding with creative energy that make any couch potato sit up, but then his "I got the hookup" video or Sillk's new video dissapointed me. Cheap jewelry, rented cars, somebody else's learjet and flat out clipart from Motor Tend magazine make these video'stacky and overtly ostentatious. But hey, that what a hustler is bout'!
