dali_garni.jpg (1731 bytes) Clint Black An all-round great performer. Great voice, excellent, music, insightful lyrics. IMHO one of the greatest musical artists that exists regardless of genre. (He's country in case you didn't know)

Click here to hear some samples of his music. Try "Loosen Up My Strings".
Exerpt lyrics from Killin' Time...one of my favorites!

You were the first thing that I thought of
When I thought I drank you off my mind
When I get lost in the liquor
You're the only one I find
And if I did the things I oughta
You still would not be mine
So I'll keep a tight grip on the bottle
Gettin' loose and killin' time
This killin' time is killin' me
Drinking myself blind thinkin' I won't see
That if I cross that line and they bury me
I just might find I'll be killin' time for eternity

Dedicated to all those out there who are members of AA...doncha know it's true.

dali_garni.jpg (1731 bytes)Brooks & Dunn One of my favorite groups. The have lovely ballads and some kick-ass music too. I like virtually all their songs but probably my favorites are My Maria and Whiskey Under the Bridge. They are Country, BTW.

I didn't include sample lyrics of their music because I listen to the purely for the sound, not the substance. Click here to hear a sample of their music. Try "My Maria"...one of my favorites by them.

dali_garni.jpg (1731 bytes)Terence Trent D'arby I know everyone remembers Wishing Well but this guy has grown beyond that one song. I have three of his CD's Introducing the Hardline, Symphony or Damn, and Vibrator. His music is kick-ass from beginning to end. I would describe Vibrator as similar to the Lenny Kravitz sound. If you like Lenny Kravitz, you owe it to yourself to try Vibrator.

Click here to hear some of his music. Try "Supermodel Sandwich" or "Vibrator".

Exerpt lyrics from Sign Your Name

all alone with you
makes the butterflies in me arise
slowly we make love
and the earth rotates
to our dictates
slowly we make love

dali_garni.jpg (1731 bytes)Little Texas Little Texas has broken up but they remain popular. While I am not a big Little Texas fan I will admit that their song, What Might Have Been, is one of my favorites. They harmonize well and have been compared to another country music band, Alabama.

Click here to hear a sample of their music. I suggest "What Might Have Been"...my favorite.

Exerpt lyrics to What Might Have Been

Sure I think about you now and then
But it's been a long, long time.
I've got a good life now, I've moved on
So when you cross my mind....

I try not to think about
What might have been
'Cause that was then
And we've taken different roads
We can't go back again, there's no use giving in
And there's no way to know
What Might Have Been.

We could sit and talk about this all night long,
And wonder why we didn't last
Yes, they might be the best days we will ever know
But we'll have to leave them in the past.

So try not to think about
What might have been
'Cause that was then
And we've taken different roads
We can't go back again, there's no use giving in
And there's no way to know
What Might Have Been.

That same old look in your eyes
It's a beautiful night
I'm so tempted to stay
But too much time has gone by
We should just say goodbye
And turn and walk away.

And try not to think about
What might have been
'Cause that was then
And we've taken different roads
We can't go back again, there's no use giving in
And there's no way to know
What Might Have Been.

No, we'll never know
What Might Have Been

dali_garni.jpg (1731 bytes)Mary's Danish Truly the greatest band you have never heard of! Awsome lyrics. Mega-awsome music. Way mega-awsome vocals. I first heard them 10 years ago when they were alternative. They were on their way up to being well known when the "white shirts" at their music label, Morgan Creek, decided to slowly strangle the life out of them. A tragedy to say the least. Check out their website and hear some music. It's worth the visit. I like many of their songs. Dodge City is one i particularly like for the music and gritty lyrics.

Click here to hear some of their music.

Exerpt lyrics to Dodge City

There Was a man who stabbed his wife
Said she was seen with another man
Well she thought she had a right to it
So She died for it

In Dodge City it was most obscene
He stabbed her in the back
And then he killed her
Well he worked it all out in his head
They say she fell to the ground
Without a sound and she was never found
Now the friends they don't come around
And the cops they did hound him

And when the newsman came around to call
the neighbors said they never would suspect him at all
That he seemed to be the slightest man in town
They'd never expect a thing like that to go down.

Now me, I tend to take the part of the wife
Cause she fell down under that sharp knife
But it really doesn't matter
What you think or what you say what you read or what you wear
What you think or what you say what you read or what you wear
What you think or what you say

There was a man who stabbed his wife.
Said she was seen with another man
Well she thought she had a right to it
Don't you die for it.

Dedicated to those ONE out of TWO women (no joke, 50%) out there who are hit by the man who has pledged his love for her. This IS how it will end if you don't leave.

dali_garni.jpg (1731 bytes)Sinead O'Connor I have liked Sinead ever since I first heard her music. I was so impressed that a teenager could express emotions in such a literate manner. I am drawn to her lovely, haunting voice. I saw her in concert in 1997 on my 35th birthday. There is something about her music that I find so transendental...I feel I become etheral. For me, hearing her in concert was a spiritual experience.

I know some don't like Sinead because she is outspoken with her beliefs/causes and because she, in anger, tore a picture of Pope John Paul II on Saturday Night Live. Well all I can say is that I am impressed with her dedication to her children...her continued to production of emotional, thought provoking music...and well, she was sexually abused by a priest when she was a child, so her anger toward the Catholic Church, however misguided, can be understood. Regardless of her stand with the church, she remains spirtual...and there are positive references to God and Christ throughout her music. The latest news is that she has been ordained as a Catholic Priest(ess?) in some fringe part of the Catholic Church and she hopes to be forgiven for tearing the picture of the Pope. She plans to continue to record under her new name which is something like Sister Mary Bernadette...but don't quote me on that!

Click here to hear some of her music. Try "Fire on Babylon".

Lyrics to I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got

im walking through the desert
and i am not frightened although it's hot
i have all that i requested
and i do not want what i haven't got

i have learned this from my mother
see how happy she has made me
i will take this road much further
though i know not where it takes me

i have water for my journey
i have bread and i have wine
no longer will i be hungry
for the bread of life is mine

i saw a navy blue bird
flying way above the sea
i walked on and i learned later
that this navy blue bird was me

i returned a paler blue bird
and this is the advice they gave me
"you must not try to be too pure
you must fly closer to the sea"

so i'm walking through the desert
and i am not frightened although it's hot
i have all that I requested
and i do not want what i haven't got

dali_garni.jpg (1731 bytes)Jane Siberry My hands-down favorite artist. I have been a fan for over 10 years when I first discovered her lovely, tender, music and killer lyrics. Her voice is like an angel's...the word etheral comes to mind...fine like gossamer. Wow! One of the highlights of my life was seeing her in concert in January 1999 and meeting her afterwards. It is difficult to categorize her music...Maria is a jazz-like CD, Bound by the Beauty is more country/folk, Teenager is just her and a guitar, The Walking is like New Age rock, When I was a Boy is like etheral, sensuous, sexy rock. I like so many of her songs it is difficult to choose one but...Love Is Everything is such a nice song.

You know if I were consistent I would select "Love is Everything" as the sample song...but I can't resist, "Teenager" is my favorite CD so click here to hear some music from it. I especially like "Let's Not Talk Now" and "Song to my Father". The latter because I never had a loving relationship with my father and listening to that song lets me feel what most daughters are allowed to feel for their father...and I was never allowed to feel.

Exerpt lyrics from Love Is Everything

maybe it was to learn how to love
maybe it was to learn how to leave
maybe it was for the games we played
maybe it was to learn how to choose
maybe it was to learn how to lose
maybe it was for the love we made

maybe it was to learn how to fight
maybe it was for the lesson in pride
maybe it was the cowboys' ways
maybe it was to learn not to lie
maybe it was to learn how to cry
maybe it was for the love we made

love is everything they said it would be
love made sweet and sad the same
but love forgot to make me too blind to see
you're chickening out aren't you?
you're bangin' on the beach like an old tin drum
i can't wait 'til you make the whole kingdom come
so i'm leaving

first he turns to you
then he turns to her
so you try to hurt him back
but it breaks your body down
so you try to love bigger
bigger still
but it...it's too late

so take a lesson from the strangeness you feel
and know you'll never be the same
and find it in your heart to kneel down and say
i gave my love didn't i?
and i gave it big...sometimes
and i gave it in my own sweet time
i'm just leaving

love is everything..

Funny how my favorite songs are usually prophetic. I liked this long before I lived it.

dali_garni.jpg (1731 bytes)Paul Simon Well I have liked Paul Simon since I was a kid. Enjoyed Simon and Garfunkel also. I like virtually all of his music...very little I have heard from him that I don't like. I was very much honored to meet him after the Graceland concert. A co-worker gave me tickets to the concert and backstage passes to the party afterwards. The first thing that impresses you is that he is very short! Well he is a great musical artist and maybe for that reason he can be forgiven for marrying an airhead like Edie Brickell!

Click here to hear some of his music.

Exerpt lyrics from Kathy's Song

And so you see I have come to doubt
All that i once held as true
I stand alone without beliefs
The only truth I know is you.

And as I watch the drops of rain
Weave their weary paths and die
I know that i am like the rain
There before the grace of you go I.

dali_garni.jpg (1731 bytes)The Sugar Cubes This fantastic group has now disbanded. Björk, one of the lead singers, has gone on to her own solo career...and cult following. You can find sites dedicated to her all over the net but I had to search for days to find a Sugar Cubes site. This group is from Iceland and burst on the music scene back in the 80's with their unique sound. I especially like the way Björk's voice is juxtaposed against Einar Örn's, the lead male vocal. As Björk's fans know she is tremendously creative with her voice and her vocal range is vast...I don't mean like Mariah Carey (how boring!)...there are times when Björk's voice is etheral, then gritty, then so overtly sexual. That is perhaps what I like most about the Sugar Cubes is their straightforward hedonistic sexuality.

Click here to hear some of their music. I suggest "Coldsweat" or "Deus"...two of my very favorites.

Lyrics to Coldsweat

i close the door.
shouldn't burn yet.
the wires get hotter - palms are glowing

this is hot meat...this is metallic blood...this is hot meat...this is open sweat.

show you with my fingers
draw with the eye
with your own breath i tear your lungs out

this is hot meat...this is metallic blood...this is hot meat...this is open sweat.

this side of the blackest meadows
i will make my winterdwelling
and crush my bones

this is hot meat...this is metallic blood...this is hot meat...this is open sweat.

i'll sail out the window
i'll walk down the hedge
i will not finish 'till i'm fully satisfied.

Admittedly, the Sugar Cubes are not for everyone. At one time, I described their sound as like domestic violence (Björk's etheral voice soaring, on some songs can sound like a woman wailing. Couple that with Einar's punctuated vocals and the driving music...well, you get the idea.)

dali_garni.jpg (1731 bytes)Talking Heads I've been a fan since I first heard Take Me to the River. For those of you who don't remember, back then disco ruled...and Take Me to the River was as different from the popular music as Opera is from Country. Geez, I remember seeing the Talking Heads on American Bandstand...now think of that oxymoron! Dick Clark and David Byrne...lol. I like virtually everything this group has done. Stop Making Sense was a great movie (and album). Burning Down the House remains one of my favorite videos. I think Little Creatures is my favorite album. I think Once in a Lifetime is my favorite song....I think...maybe i think too much?

Click here to hear some of their music. Heck I like too much of their music to suggest any one sample....well, maybe..."And She Was" or "Stay Up Late".

Exerpt lyrics to Once in a Lifetime

And you may ask yourself - How do I work this?
And you may ask yourself - Where is that large automobile?
And you may tell yourself - This is not my beautiful house!
And you may tell yourself - This is not my beautiful wife!

Letting the days go by/let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by/water flowing underground
Into the blue again/after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime/water flowing underground.

Same as it ever was...Same as it ever was...Same as it ever was... Same as it ever was...Same as it ever was...Same as it ever was... Same as it ever was...Same as it ever was...

And you may ask yourself - What is that beautiful house?
And you may ask yourself - Where does that highway go?
And you may ask yourself - Am I right?...Am I wrong?
And you may tell yourself - MY GOD!...WHAT HAVE I DONE?

Anyone over the age of 30 should get this...especially if you sacrificed what you truly love and studied accounting, took on the mortgage, got married and had the proverbial 2.5 children...excuse me...i think i just got sick. In the words of the truly immortal Joseph Campbell..."Follow Your Bliss."

dali_garni.jpg (1731 bytes)The The This is a very good rock band. They were considered alternative when I discovered them 10 years ago. I have a few of their CD's but I have to admit that Mind Bomb is my favorite. Still sounds fresh 10 years later. This is one great CD...some great rock, some sexy love ballads, good lyrics. I am always impressed when young artists can express emotions/feelings/thoughts, in an intelligent, literate manner....not just spluttering youthful angst. Matt Johnson has one of the sexiest voices out there! Gravitate to me is one of my fav's by them.

Click here to hear some of their music. Oh, I like EVERYTHING on this CD...don't ask me to suggest...oh, ok if you insist...try "Kingdom of Rain", it's a duet with Sinead O'Connor. When you click on the link to go to Amazon to hear this group's music, read the reviews of this (or any other The The album there) and you will see repeated again and again...a must have, best band around, still my favorite CD, etc, etc...The The is possibly the most under-appreciated band in the history of rock music.

Exerpt lyrics to Gravitate to Me

I've been watching you for ages
You're like a boat without a mast
Struggling with the tide of destiny
Between the future and the past

I am the lighthouse
I am the sea
I am the air that you breathe
Gravitate to me

Through the ether and the mists of the mind
You will come to me to lay by my side
To stroke my hair, to cuddle my flesh
And to quell the torrents in my subterranean depths

This world aint strong enough to keep us from each other
For we are kindred spirits, born to become earthly lovers

And while my vanity struggles against my integrity
I find myself thinking, how deep runs my humanity?
When held up against eternity?

I am the lighthouse
I am the sea
I am your destiny
Gravitate to me

There is something within your voice.
something within your eyes.
something inside your heart,
that is beating in time with mine...

I know you
From a previous incarnation..
