Creating Pages

4. The contents of your screen should resemble the screen shot above. Obviously though your address and member name will differ from the one displayed above. Scroll down until you reach the part of the file manager that is shown in the screen shot below.

You're now given a choice of editors which you can use to create a new web page. Your choices are presented in a drop-down list, surrounded by a red oval in the screen shot above. For practical purposes, we will be discussing two out of four of the editors available via the file manager.

• Advanced HTML Editor --> If you know how to write HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) code, then this is certainly the editor for you. This editor sports a simple interface -- it contains only a box where you can input all the HTML code for a page -- yet is really very powerful. The fact that you're not limited as to what HTML tags you can place exemplifies its power.
• Basic HTML Editor --> If you do not know how to write HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) code, then this is the editor for you. Featuring a simple and user-friendly interface, this editor produces generic pages without you knowing anything about HTML.

Now that you know the advantages and disadvantages of using the two most popular editors in GeoCities, please select the editor of your choice.

NOTE The increasing popularity of WYSIWIG (What You See Is What You Get) HTML editors that have interfaces similar to word processors or page layout programs motivated GeoCities to introduce the GeoBuilder. It is a Javascript-based editor that allows a user without HTML knowledge to produce high quality web pages. You can find a link to it in the file manager. Be warned though that it only runs in browsers that support Javascript.
